Champions support good causes with wide range of fundraising initiatives

Our town’s network of Chesterfield Champions continue to play their part in supporting the local community.

Several business in the town have gone above and beyond to help good causes and help those most in need. Take a look at the latest community initiatives that have taken place across our town:


UKATA Brews Up Support for Macmillan

UKATA is set to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning on 25 September, 10am – 12noon at Markham Vale Environment Centre. This event is part of the annual campaign from Macmillan Cancer Support, designed to bring people together over a cup of coffee to raise vital funds for cancer research and support services.

The first Coffee Morning happened in 1990. It was a small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their drink to Macmillan.

Now Coffee Mornings come in all shapes and sizes. From small home gatherings to large corporate events; school fundraisers to a gathering with a local community group. They all have one thing in common – they raise vital funds to support the more than 3 million people in the UK living with cancer.

Local businesses, UKATA members and associates are invited to come along to help raise much needed funds and indulge in homemade cakes and biscuits. In previous years the association has raised more than £600 for the charity in similar events.

On organising the event, UKATA’s Marketing Executive Nathan Shaw says: “With the support from the team, we plan to try and exceed our previous fundraising efforts to raise as much as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support, we will even be having a bit of friendly competition between us, with a bake off judged by a special guest”

UKATA, a leading association, is dedicated to enhancing the quality and standards of asbestos training with the aim to shield workers and the public from the hazards of asbestos exposure.

The association collaborates closely with its members to guarantee that they have access to the latest information, training resources, and industry updates. They provide a suite of support services to assist them in accomplishing their training objectives. Their membership encompasses a diverse array of organisations involved in asbestos training, including training providers, asbestos removal contractors, consultants, and equipment suppliers.


Over £1,500 raised at Vicar Lane’s charity day

Vicar Lane has announced that a total of £1,598.07 was raised at their charity event on Saturday 10th August.

The event was organised in aid of Ashgate Hospice and saw visitors enjoying a range of exciting activities at the centre.

All proceeds from the activities which took place on the day have been donated to Ashgate Hospice, who provide free palliative and end of life care as well as bereavement support to people aged 18 and over in North Derbyshire.

Brandon Howard, Centre Administrator said: “We’re delighted that so many of the local community came to Vicar Lane to support Ashgate Hospice. As well as raising much needed funds, we hope this also provided a great day out for families.”

Rachel Brought, Senior Corporate and Communication Fundraiser at Ashgate Hospice said: “A big thanks to Vicar Lane and the local community for supporting Ashgate Hospice at the recent charity event. Without the efforts of our supporters like Vicar Lane we simply wouldn’t be able to continue caring for the patients who need us and their families”.

Over the summer, Vicar Lane has hosted a number of events and there is still time to get involved.


Graysons team up with Ashgate Hospice for free wills week

Glassyard-based Graysons Solicitors is delighted to announce a partnership with one of Chesterfield’s leading charities, offering a free will writing service from September 30th to October 4th, 2024.

The legal firm are encougaing clients and supporters to make a suggested donation of £75 per will, which will fund crucial work of Ashgate Hospice in providing specialist care to those with life limiting illnesses.

Laura Law, senior individual giving and legacy officer at Ashgate Hospice, said: “We’re so happy to once again have the support of Graysons Solicitors during their Will Week fundraiser.

“Writing a will is so important to ensure that our affairs are in order while making sure our loved ones are looked after when we’re no longer here. Not only that but it allows us to put plans in place so that we can get on with making the most of the time we have with them.”

Graysons are offering free standard wills as part of the complimentary session, together with advice on other subjects from powers of attorney to trust arrangements.

Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “Every donation will help provide specialist care and support to people living with a life-limiting or incurable illness, and to the people important to them. Making a will provides peace of mind that your affairs will be handled in the way the you wish in the future.”

Chesterfield Canal Cruises raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young

Chesterfield Canal Trust raised a total of £600 by hosting special Canal Cruises in aid of the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.

On Monday 26th August, the Chesterfield Canal Trust ran cruises on its Madeline tripboat.

All fares were be donated to CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young – in memory of Madeline Siddall after whom the boat is named.

On 7th July 2011, Madeline collapsed and died of a cardiac arrest (Young Sudden Cardiac Death, or YSCD). She was just 15 years old. There had been no warning signs, she appeared to be fit and healthy.

12 young people die of YSCD each week. With 80% of these there will be no warning. It is the third highest killer of young people under the age of 35, yet there is no national screening programme to help detect the heart defects that cause it.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is a charity that funds research into YSCD, bereavement support, screening and much more.


Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity To Benefit From Being the ‘Charity of the Year’ Across Bolsover

Not one but two organisations from Bolsover have committed to supporting Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity as their ‘Charity of the Year’ for 2024/25.

Bolsover District Council and the Chairman, Tom Munro, together with SNAP Fitness, have made the declaration to support the charity as so many local people are supported by the incredible work of the Trust on a daily basis.

Cllr Munro, said: “We very much appreciate Chesterfield Royal Hospital; it’s a great local asset for people. The care given is exceptional and many of the colleagues who work at the Trust are also members of our community, so it felt right to support the charity. We have numerous activities planned throughout the year to raise awareness and fundraise for them including raffles, my Civic Dinner, my Civic Service and many more.”

The Charity has recently undergone a change to branding to show a clearer connection to the whole hospital trust – and aims to make ‘every day exceptional’. The Charity was responsible for the £2m Health and Wellbeing Hub, which provides free access for colleagues employed by the Trust 24/7.

Josh Dawes, added: “Our Members have often used the hospital and have lived in the area for generations, so we really wanted to show our support. It’s great that the Charity is committed to working with us too – we’re offering free day passes to colleagues and will be fundraising across the year as well as supporting with Health and Wellbeing talks at the Trust. It’s exciting stuff!”

Both organisations will continue to work with the Trust and Charity to raise awareness and fundraise across the year – and they are always on the look out for volunteers, ideas and to have direct engagement from people in the community to support. Banner Jones Expands Residential Property Department with Three Key Appointments

Banner Jones, a leading regional law firm, has significantly strengthened its Residential Property department with the addition of three new hires. This expansion supports the firm’s ongoing efforts to enhance its service offering amidst a growing demand for residential property services.

The team welcomes Sarah Khatib, an experienced solicitor with over 16 years of expertise, who joins as a Director. Sarah will be based in the Chesterfield office, where she will work closely with Richard Joy and Kate Skelton to support the management and development of the residential property teams.

Her extensive knowledge will play a key role in advancing the firm’s service delivery and operational processes in the firm’s  key localities of Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

Chesterfield apprentice named as Newcomer of the Year in LABC East Midlands Building Excellence Awards 2024

A Chesterfield building control apprentice has been named as the industry’s Newcomer of the Year in the LABC East Midlands Building Excellence Awards 2024.

Charlotte Gladwin (22), a Level 4 apprentice with DBCP, started her five-year Building Control surveying Degree Apprenticeship last year after making the transition from retail management.

The LABC award recognises Charlotte’s exceptional proactivity, dedication, and customer-focused approach.

She said: “I am delighted to win the award at this early stage in my career. The opportunities provided by the team at DBCP are so exciting. I’m really enjoying being out on site and being part of a process that creates positive change in the local landscapes for our communities.”

Prior to joining DBCP, Charlotte was pet shop store manager for three years. Keen to move out of retail and, with an interest in construction and the outdoors, she identified Building Control as the ideal profession in which to build a career.

Explaining why she made the move into building control, she said: “I really enjoyed studying Geography, Psychology and Business at A-Level and, together with my love of the outdoors, I felt that a career in building control aligned with my future ambitions.”

DBCP’s Building Control Manager, David Pratt praised Charlotte’s dedication to her apprenticeship saying: “Charlotte quickly demonstrated her ability to support building inspectors by anticipating their needs, preparing for site visits, and actively contributing to inspections. Her attention to detail and eagerness to learn have made her a valuable asset to the team. Her commitment to excellence is evident in her work, both on-site and in her college studies, where she consistently aims for distinction.”

In addition to Charlotte, David Pratt was also recognised in the prestigious awards when he clinched the Public Service Superstar Award.

With a career in building control spanning more than three decades, LABC judges praised David ‘unwavering dedication to professional development and his commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning within DBCP’, adding that ‘his leadership by example, from passing Level 6 courses with distinction to providing invaluable guidance on officer validations, has helped to set the high standards at DBCP.’

His forward-thinking approach, which saw the introduction of the company’s successful Apprenticeship scheme, and the development of a training partnership with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), has been instrumental in transforming the company.

Further success for DBCP at the annual industry awards came when Oak Grange Primary School in Derby was named as the Best Public or Community Building.

DBCP, worked alongside Lungfish Architects and Morgan Sindall to deliver the multi-million-pound school in 2023. Collaboration between DBCP, the architects, and contractors ensured the school’s design met aesthetic and functional goals, making it a valuable addition to Derby’s educational resources. The school was also delivered on budget despite rising material costs and also saving 10 tonnes of CO2 during construction.

David, commented: “I am honoured to have won the award but equally delighted to see Charlotte, and DBCP’s projects recognised. It is a tremendous achievement for everyone.

“All the wins reflect our combined commitment to excellence in building control and our dedication to supporting high-quality, sustainable construction projects throughout Derbyshire and Staffordshire Moorlands.”

David, Charlotte and Oak Grange Primary School were amongst 12 winners at the awards in August. The annual awards celebrate significant achievements within the construction industry, rewarding excellent buildings, outstanding companies, as well as partnerships and individuals that go the extra mile.

All the winners from LABC East Midlands Building Excellence Awards 2024 will now go forward to the national LABC Building Excellence Awards grand final which take place in London on Friday, 24 January 2025.


BHP appoints new CIO as it looks to harness disruptive technology

BHP, one of the North’s leading accountancy firms, has appointed Melanie Foster as its first Chief Information Officer (CIO), as the firm looks to harness the power of technology to support its clients’ objectives.

Melanie, who has held a number of senior technology positions within the financial services sector, brings with her almost two decades of experience in technology innovation and integration.

In her new role, she will work alongside the wider team to develop and progress the company’s data and technology strategy, keeping it at the forefront of new tools and advancements, including AI, to support both internal processes and client services.

Chesterfield accountancy practice, Shorts, has acted as advisor on a large business sale, as Dinnington-based company Direct Track Solutions Ltd (DTS) has been acquired by Swiss company Schwihag AG.

It has been a pleasure to work with them on this international transaction, and we look forward to hearing of Direct Track’s continuing success under Schwihag’s ownership.“

Direct Track Solutions Ltd will continue to trade under the DTS Brand, with the company structure and personnel remaining unchanged.

The acquisition of DTS last month supplements Schwihag’s manufacturing facilities in Doncaster; Leipzig, Germany and Grandview Missouri, USA, alongside its additional regional offices in Valencia, Spain and New Delhi, India.  The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, is seen as a strategic addition to Schwihag’s UK portfolio, increasing the range of products and services offered to the market.


New team member a ‘wonderful addition’ for Oasis Studio

Oasis Studio has expanded its team, welcoming Olivia Dale to the company.

Olivia is currently studying her Master’s Degree in Architecture at Sheffield Hallam University. She has joined the Oasis Studio EyeSiteView team for her internship and has already been contributing significantly to the firm’s live projects.

Olivia commented: “I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to intern at Oasis Studio. It’s been an incredible experience working on live projects for EyeSiteView alongside a talented team who have provided invaluable support and guidance. Several Chesterfield Champions named as finalists for Derbyshire Business Awards

A number of Chesterfield Champion businesses have been listed amongst the finalists for the prestigious Derbyshire Business Awards, hosted by East Midlands Chamber.

The Champions included in the list of nominations include Global Brands Ltd, SDE Group, Shed Grounds Maintenance, Dalton Roofing, KranLee Logistics, DBC Training, EcoTech Engineers and Geeks Headquarters.

Finalists were revealed at the President’s Summer Celebration on 21st August. Finalists were selected by a panel of judges made of sponsors and senior management at East Midlands Chamber.

East Midlands Chamber President Stuart Dawkins said: “When I look at the people and organisations that have entered or been fortunate enough to become finalists for this year’s East Midlands Business Awards I’m blown away by the calibre and talent. The quality of entries was exceptionally high and I’m sure the judging panels had some tough decisions to make as the shortlist was compiled.

A Real Balance Between Work and Play: Why Professionals Are Choosing Chesterfield

Business leaders in Chesterfield have shared their thoughts on why they’ve chosen the town as a destination to build their livelihoods. Speaking at the recent Destination Chesterfield roundtable, held in conjunction with the Derbyshire Times, business owners and employees praised the work-life balance offered in the town, alongside its central location and access to opportunities.

Situated near the Peak District National Park, Chesterfield residents enjoy unparalleled access to outdoor activities. The proximity to such natural beauty, coupled with a wealth of green space within the town, contributes to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

Jamie Wajs, Owner of Lime Living Estate Agents, believes people are moving to Chesterfield from other areas due to the town’s unique offerings. He said, “We see a lot of people from industry moving into town or returning here because there’s a real balance between work and play.”

Catherine Wenborn, Owner of Vines Legal Ltd, emphasized this point, stating, “There is a very strong family focus here. I have been a relative newcomer to the area, but there are families that go back generations and there’s a very strong community. Chesterfield is very well accessed with transport links which also makes it a nice place to live.”

Catherine previously spent time working in London and compared it to the lifestyle she now enjoys in Chesterfield. She told delegates that the difference is stark: “The whole idea of ‘bright city lights’ in the capital really wasn’t the case at all. Here in Chesterfield, you feel like you’re part of the community. People are friendly and welcoming, even if they do tease me about my southern accent!”

Rebecca Erskine, Owner of Yellow Bird Marketing and Communications, added, “I think it’s the amount of space we have to live our lives as well. If you want to be part of something in the hustle and bustle, you can be, but if you want to be somewhere completely remote, you’re only 15 minutes away. It’s such an area of natural beauty that everything around us is really appealing.”

Chesterfield’s strong sense of community was highlighted by several people during the discussion. Helen Bradshaw, Business Development Director at Learning Curve Group commented, “I moved up here when I was 22, having lived in many towns and cities. I came here on a weekend to visit and then ended up moving up here permanently! I’ve always found Chesterfield to be a very green town, which has a friendly feel and community spirit to it.”

“You feel like everyone is really in the same boat, supporting the same goals. I think people take pride in this town, and so a lot of businesses take pride in what they are bringing to the community.”

A significant draw for many is Chesterfield’s remarkable work-life balance. Its proximity to many other urban centres provides access to opportunities while allowing individuals to retreat to a quieter, more manageable lifestyle. Paul Stuart, Head of Business Support Services for East Midlands Chamber, added, “I think the space available for businesses is good. It’s also things we don’t necessarily think of which add to the quality of life, such as the commute. Our head office is based in Chesterfield, and where I live is just 15 minutes away, and that’s the thing that makes it comfortable for me. I’m not stuck on the motorway or relying on trains.”

Lewis Silcock Business Development Manager at DBC Training said, “There’s quite a lot of greenery, fields, and parks, and you don’t have to get in the car and drive somewhere to take the dog for a walk. We love to go out as a family to the park, and it’s nice to be able to just step out of your door after work. Chesterfield has the right balance between green spaces and business space.”

Jo Down, Assistant Principal for Student Experience and Wellbeing at Chesterfield College, shared her perspective: “I believe as someone born and raised in the town, we can often take things for granted. I love to walk and run down the canal, and we have lots of nice cafes and eateries to socialise. Hospice fundraiser raises record-breaking amount towards care

Ashgate Hospice’s biggest ever fundraising event, the Sparkle Night Walk, raised more than a record-breaking £340,000 for end of life care in North Derbyshire.

More than 3,400 people sported pink and flashing bunny ears at the 10km walk in Chesterfield on Saturday 22 June.

The total figure raised from the fundraiser, sponsored by NOCN, was a phenomenal £341,854– the most the walkers have ever raised after smashing the record of £317, 671 set last year.

The event will return for its 10th anniversary next year on 28 June 2025 – and supporters can register at a reduced rate of £8 until Sunday 11 August.

Director of Income Generation at Ashgate Hospice, Jack Wood said he was “incredibly grateful” for the support of the event’s participants.

“We are so overwhelmed that our amazing participants have once again raised such an incredible amount towards our care,” said Jack.

“To beat the record amount raised at our Sparkle Night Walk last year, only to do it again in 2024 is a testament to the dedication of our supporters.

“This could fund the care of one of the beds on our Inpatient Unit at the hospice for more than a year, giving patients 24/7 expert care when they need it most.

“We are incredibly grateful for their efforts and their support will go a long way towards funding end of life care and support for patients and their families across North Derbyshire.”

Plans are already underway for Sparkle Night Walk 2025, sponsored by Magpie Beauty, with super early bird tickets being sold now for a reduced rate of £8 until Sunday 11 August.

More than 1,000 people have already signed up to next year’s event, which the hospice hopes will be “even bigger”.

Jack Wood added: “This year’s Sparkle Night Walk might be behind us but we’re already working hard to make next year event better – you can register at our early bird pride for just £8!

“Will you come along to celebrate our 10th anniversary of the Sparkle Night Walk and help us break records for the third year in a row?”

The walk will take place on Saturday 28 June 2025 – sign up now on the hospice’s website.


BRM raises over £200,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support

Leading Derbyshire and South Yorkshire law firm BRM has raised a total of £202,424 since 2015 for Macmillan Cancer Support services at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital thanks to support from clients during its annual free Will months.

Now in its ninth year, the firm’s partnership with Macmillan enables people to make a Will for free during two months of the year. Instead of paying a fee to BRM, it was requested a voluntary donation was made to the charity, with a recommended contribution of just £75 per person.

The donation will go towards supporting people and their families who are affected by cancer across the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire region and will help the charity continue providing their vital care within the community.

Paul Berresford, Executive Director at BRM, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped support our free Wills month in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support since 2015.

“The funds will go towards the charity and help support them continue their much-needed services across the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire community.

“Macmillan is a charity close to our hearts and we’re proud to have worked alongside them for several years.

“It’s very important to have a Will in place, as it ensures that your affairs are in order and your loved ones are provided for so it’s fantastic to see so many people who have taken advantage of our offer.

Chatsworth introduces affordable tickets for people receiving universal credit

Chatsworth House Trust, the charity responsible for caring for the house, collections, garden, woodlands and park at Chatsworth, has announced new lower priced tickets for those currently receiving income support including Universal Credit and Pension Credit.

The aim of the new tickets is to increase accessibility for, and engagement with those who may find cost a barrier to visiting, demonstrating the Trust’s continued commitment to making Chatsworth a place for everyone.

The tickets include access to the house, garden, farmyard and adventure playground and are priced at £3 for adults and £1 for children aged 3-16 years, for those who are eligible.

Paul Hayes, Head of Visitor Strategy at Chatsworth House Trust, added: “As a charity that is dedicated to preserving Chatsworth for everyone to enjoy, accessibility is one of our main priorities, and we are always looking at new ways to remove barriers to visiting.

“This year we have a programme of events around the theme of Celebrating Childhood, so it’s fantastic to hear that so many families are already benefiting from the new tickets.

Stepnell launches competition for local artists as part of Walton Hospital construction project

As part of it’s social value commitments to NHS Derbyshire Healthcare, Stepnell is looking for artistic Chesterfield residents to design a mural for a wall in the therapeutic garden of Bluebell Ward at Walton Hospital.

It needs to provide a calming backdrop for an area where those using the service will be able to relax and undertake some gardening tasks.

The winning design will cover an area 3m x 2m and will be painted onto the wall by volunteers.

Artists are being asked to prepare their entries on A3 landscape white paper and submit a photograph of their work to eastmidlands@stepnell.co.uk by 31 August 2024.


Mayor visits Heron Publications as company celebrates 22nd anniversary

A special guest at the Dronfield offices of Heron Publications recently was the Mayor of Chesterfield, Coun Jenny Flood.

Accompanied by the town’s Mayoress, Heather Hopkinson, Coun Flood was keen to see how staff at the independent magazine publishers produce their five local magazines – Twist, Wings, Dronfield Eye, Active8 and So Bolsover, distributing them to 59,000 homes and businesses.

Two new hires for Superior Wellness

Success for Devonshire Group as Peak Shopping Village reaches full occupancy

Visitors to Peak Village are to be treated to the arrival of two Derbyshire-based independent businesses this Summer as the centre continues to evolve its retail and leisure mix in line with a long-term investment strategy by owners, the Devonshire Group.

Now fully let, August will see the centre welcome Ashbourne-based luxury fashion boutique, Young Ideas and pottery studios, The Clayrooms. This latest milestone at Peak Village builds on a strong year at the retail destination, with footfall climbing to half a million in spite of difficult, post-pandemic trading conditions. Positive momentum is likewise being reflected in the centre’s financial performance, with turnover up by over £4m in the past three years, peaking at £8m for FY 2023-24.

Young Ideas has taken on a 1,500 sq ft unit at Peak Village following the runaway success of another of their group brands, Henmores, which itself opened at the centre in October 2023. The boutique will run as a pop-up shop for an initial six months.

The arrival of Young Ideas and The Clayrooms is the latest phase in the development of the retail and leisure outlet at Peak Village, providing greater choice for customers, increasing employment opportunities, and supporting the growth of local businesses.

Katayune Jacquin, centre manager at Peak Village, said: “Fully letting Peak Village marks an exciting milestone in our journey to transform the centre’s appeal to customers. Derbyshire County Cricket Club successful in Women’s Tier 2 bid

Derbyshire Women will play in Tier Two of the restructured domestic pyramid from 2025 onwards, after the Club’s bid to the England & Wales Cricket Board was successful.

Derbyshire’s senior Women’s team, as well as Girls’ Talent Pathway, will run alongside the current Men’s professional and junior development setup, as part of the new women’s domestic structure, which will see all first-class and national counties represented within the three-tier pyramid.

Derbyshire’s bid, which was presented as part of the process to determine which counties would be placed in each tier, was selected by the ECB, after showcasing the Club’s and Derbyshire Cricket Foundation’s commitment to growing the women’s game within the region.

As a host venue attracting record crowds for several England internationals, as well as the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup, Derbyshire continues to be one of the biggest supporters of women’s cricket in the country and in June hosted the groundbreaking Charlotte Edwards Cup Finals Day.

The Derbyshire Cricket Foundation has delivered significant growth in the Women and Girls game across the county and in 2023, Derbyshire clubs featured in more than a quarter of all women’s cricket played across the Midlands, while the likes of Danni Wyatt, Sarah Glenn and Bess Heath, have all been involved in the Women and Girls Pathway and gone on to make multiple appearances for the national side.

Further details regarding players and coaching staff for the Derbyshire Women’s team will be announced in due course.

Derbyshire Chief Executive, Ryan Duckett, said: “The restructuring of women’s domestic cricket is a huge moment for the game, not just in Derbyshire, but across the country.

Shorts announce acquisition of Hewson & Howson

Accountancy and Tax specialists Shorts have announced the acquisition of South Yorkshire Accountancy firm Hewson & Howson, in a deal which sees all of the Hewson & Howson employees join the Shorts team.

Formed by Ian Hewson and Andrew Howson in 1995, Hewson & Howson built a respected reputation throughout their 30 year history, specialising in providing a partner led service to owner managed businesses. Driven by the decision for both Ian Hewson and Andrew Howson to retire, transferring the business to an accounting firm with a similar culture and service ethic was a key priority for both outgoing partners.

New chair appointed at Ashgate Hospice to lead charity

Ashgate Hospice has announced the appointment of Chris Hallam as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Chris, a distinguished Behavioural Psychologist with extensive leadership experience in the banking sector and consultancy, brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the North Derbyshire hospice.

The 58-year-old, who was formally appointed to the role at a trustee meeting in May, expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to building on the hospice’s remarkable achievements and advancing its mission.

Chris said: “What a huge privilege it is to be given this chance to lead such an important organisation like Ashgate Hospice.

“I am in awe of everything our staff, volunteers, patrons, supporters and patients do to make the hospice the place it is today.

“My personal values of kindness, fairness, and togetherness align closely with Ashgate’s values of compassion, teamwork, and being respectful, open, and inclusive.

“I have deep roots in this area, having been nurtured by the communities of North Derbyshire. My role at Ashgate is a wonderful chance to give back to the community that has been a significant part of my life.”

Chris was inspired to work with Ashgate Hospice after a personal experience when his school friend received care at a hospice.

The care and support his friend received “made a profound difference to him and his family”, and Chris wanted to do his bit to help other families in similar circumstances.

Expressing excitement about the future of Ashgate Hospice, Chris added: “The superb leadership team is developing ambitious plans to ensure we continue to grow and spread the Ashgate magic far and wide.

“Our priorities will focus on expanding our reach, improving our services, and innovating in how we deliver care to a broader community.

“One of the biggest challenges we face is the lack of funding for end-of-life care. We must raise our voice nationally to address this issue.

“Despite these challenges, I am confident in our ability to continue providing exceptional care.”


Competition success for Learning Curve Group students

Students at Chesterfield’s Learning Curve Group have been praised for claiming top prizes in a series of national competitions.

In Blackpool at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competition, Learning Curve took home the following accolades.

  • First place 1960s Makeup by our Level 2 student Emily Wharton
  • First place for creative nail art by our Level 2 student Cassie Swindell
  • Fourth place Bridal Makeup by Level 2 student Emily Wharton

Students competed against substantial community/ public colleges of which entered several students in each competition. However with practice, skill, high levels of creativity and perseverance Learning Curve managed to take home three wins.

At the World Skills Beauty Therapy competition, Learning Curve initially entered 10 media makeup students, a mixture of level 2 and level 3 in the photographic entry stage back in May. The college managed to gain a place for all students to compete in the regional stage, which was an outstanding achievement, especially when only just over 1000 students gained places in this stage across the UK.

Learning Curve Group also entered 3 Beauty Therapy students, another mixture of level 2 and level 3 students into the Beauty therapist and Practitioner competitions.

Upon this success, in June, Learning Curve took students to York City College to participate in the next stage of the competition. Learners demonstrated exceptional professionalism, courage and determination. Now, students and tutors are awaiting results from this competition . If the team are to be successful, the next stage will be the national Competition which is held in Manchester in November.

Lastly, another Learning Curve student, Naomi Morris, started her journey with the college aged just 16 years old as a Study Programme Learner. Naomi completed 3 years at the Chesterfield Academy where she studied Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Level 4 Diploma in Permanent Hair Removal & Skin Rejuvenation.  She has since been successful in being offered a place with Steiner Cruise Ships and is due to start her new job role this year.


Spireites land new stand sponsorship deal

A new sponsorship deal has been agreed which will see the West Stand at the SMH Group Stadium re-named The LMD Vacuum Excavation (West) Stand.

Commenting on the news, Mick Dysart, LMD Vacuum Excavation’s managing director, said: “We are really proud to be able to sponsor the West Stand.

“We’re lifelong supporters and it is a real privilege to be able to do something for the community and sponsor the club.

Spireites collaborate with fellow Chesterfield business to create exciting new product for fans

Chesterfield Football Club has collaborated with local business and fellow Chesterfield Champion, CarMats.co.uk to launch a custom product for supporters.

Spireites who want to add a personal touch to their motors can now purchase car mats with a Chesterfield FC logo on, ensuring the club crest travels with them wherever they go to support the team for the club’s first season back in the EFL.

The mats come in a variety of materials and can be customised with a selection of colour, trim and embroidery options. All mats are made to order in the UK.

Positive outlook for East Midlands businesses as new research shows boost in sales and orders

Increased sales and orders, a growing confidence in future profitability, and reduced pressure to increase prices are among a series of findings from a new East Midlands survey of over 300 businesses.

Six in 10 respondents to East Midlands Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey (Q2, 2024) said they anticipated their turnover to improve this year, with half expecting gains in profitability to follow. An increasing number of businesses were planning to boost their investment in new equipment and training and there was a drop in those reporting difficulties with cashflow.

East Midlands Chamber Head of Special Projects Richard Blackmore said: “It’s fantastic to see so many measures in our Quarterly Economic Survey pointing to growth for East Midlands businesses, with the data suggesting this will continue over the remainder of the year. What everyone in business wants to see is their turnover and profit going up and price pressures falling and that’s exactly the picture being painted by this data.

“For fewer respondents than in the last quarter to say they feel a compulsion to raise prices and for that data to coincide with a drop in inflation this week to 2% is a good combination. Orders are up, both in the UK and overseas, and businesses are increasingly talking up their intentions to invest, especially in plant and machinery. These are all signs that businesses are moving away from the drawn-out days of just ‘getting by’ in the face of tough times and are now looking to push ahead.

“It’s worthy of note that just as many East Midlands businesses are saying ‘competition’ is up there with inflation in their list of growing concerns. A healthy economy requires healthy competition between businesses, so this finding again suggests brighter times lie ahead for the rest of 2024.”

Highlights from East Midlands Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey Q2, 2024:

• Six out of ten respondents expected turnover to increase

• Nearly half of respondents expected profitability to increase

• One third of respondents expected to raise prices (down from Q4 2023 when the figure was two out of five)

• Three out of ten respondents reported an increase in overseas sales over the last three months (up from two out ten in Q3, 2023)

• Just under a quarter of respondents expected overseas orders to increase over the next three months

In Chesterfield, businesses in the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have noticed a positive trend.

David Beckford, Managing Director of Pronto Paints commented: “Regarding the general business environment, I’d agree things are looking more positive in 2024. People are starting to make decisions again and move forward with plans. Pronto has seen an increase in volume over the last quarter and signs are it will continue in the coming months, across many of the sectors we work with.”

Peter Botham, Managing Director at Shed Grounds Maintenance said: “We have had an exceptional start to the new financial year, having secured nearly as many new contracts in the first 3 months as we did in the entirety of last year. This remarkable achievement is, however, tempered by the challenge of managing our margins with escalating costs, particularly in labour and fuel. Additionally, we are facing a shortage of skilled personnel to support our growth, making recruitment a significant challenge. Despite these hurdles, we remain optimistic about the future and our ability to continue our successful trajectory.”

Mark Niblett, Managing Director at MTM Products added: “Our sector continues to see increases in the cost of materials, and we are optimistic that the economy will improve over the coming year.

Guy Wall, Head of Marketing at GCL Products said: “At GCL Products, we’ve experienced firsthand the positive momentum reflected in the East Midlands Chamber’s latest survey. A sustained upturn in sales has given us the confidence to grow our staff numbers by 40% since the start of 2024, as well as pursuing futher development of our product range and improvement of production and dispatch processes. This growth reinforces our positive outlook for the future and we’re excited to continue investing in our people and infrastructure to maintain this upward trajectory.”

Crush rebrands global engineering firm

Creative marketing agency, Crush Design has finalised its rebrand for Ziemann Holvrieka. The global firm, based in Germany, specialises in the production of large-scale commercial liquid food and beverage processing equipment.

Crush says it transformed the company’s corporate image into a brand fit for a global leader in tanks and process technology. Following this, the team developed a full suite of new marketing assets. This included a multilingual website, sales presentations and brochures, a comprehensive brand guide, wayfinding and exhibition stands.

BRM makes five senior promotions across firm

Chesterfield and Sheffield-based law firm BRM is delighted to announce a string of senior promotions across its two offices after a period of significant growth.

BRM’s Real Estate team’s Mario Esposito and Adele Walker have both been promoted to senior solicitor, whilst Umara Zafar is set to qualify as a solicitor in May after starting at the firm as a paralegal before becoming a trainee.

In the firm’s Dispute Resolution department Kate Fowler has been promoted to Senior Associate, whilst Jennifer Knibbs and Annabel Denby Hollis become Associates.
