Chesterfield business leaders encourage firms to take advantage of local support

Chesterfield business leaders are urging companies across the town to take advantage of a wide range of support being offered, to assist in their growth and innovation.

The recent Destination Chesterfield Round Table discussion, conducted in collaboration with the Derbyshire Times, brought together several organisations to celebrate the reasons why they love working, living and running businesses in the town.

Delegates highlighted how Chesterfield was a town full of opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs, with its vibrant community, strategic location, access to skill and talent, and robust support ecosystem.

Firms across the Borough of Chesterfield can currently access a wide range of support options. From improving sustainability to upskilling their teams and exploring innovation and growth, the Round Table panel were keen to encourage other businesses in the town to take advantage of the schemes available.

Abigail Phillips, Start-up Advisor at East Midlands Chamber explained more about the Chesterfield Accelerator Scheme, which was launched in late 2023: “The programme provides one-to-one business support. The key thing about it is that our advisors can highlight potential improvements which you may not know about or haven’t considered. A series of workshops are being hosted across our region too.”

Cllr Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council commented: “As a council, we hold regular conversations with businesses across a diverse range of sectors, so we have a good overall vision of what is happening across the borough. The Manufacturing and Property & Construction Forums held under the Destination Chesterfield umbrella are a real strength. I am also very keen to highlight the Skills Brokerage Service which Chesterfield Borough Council has launched for businesses, which allows us to talk to a range of organisations about their skills gaps and identify what they need.”

Chesterfield boasts a bustling community of more than 5,000 businesses. Whether you’re starting up, or looking to grow, a supportive network of organisations are more than happy to share advice. From informal meetups to large exhibitions and major summit events, the sense of camaraderie in Chesterfield helps to reassure people when faced with the challenges of starting a business.

Catherine Wenborn, Managing Director at Vines Legal Ltd spoke of her experience of moving her organisation to the town: “We were shy at the beginning, very much newcomers. However, we got involved in networking with other businesses, attending BNI and the Chesterfield Business Expo at Casa Hotel. We soon found that it was great to meet local businesses. It is always hard setting up in a new place, but people are so friendly here, and people always welcome you. There are so many opportunities here, and now I certainly don’t want to go back down south!”

For established companies, being ingrained into Chesterfield’s community becomes a natural progression. Matt Killingley, Business Development Director of NT Killingley Ltd, which has been trading for more than half a century, explained how important it is for business owners to step away from their day-to-day tasks and collaborate with others.

He said: “One of the most useful things for me was being part of a Chamber initiative which saw a group of managing directors meeting semi-formally once every month. It was very useful because we were all non-competing businesses, and it enabled you to step out of your own business, share problems and then discuss possible solutions. Running a business is totally encompassing, and to step away just for a couple of hours and meet with other business leaders is a great idea.”

Abigail Phillips added: “Through adversity, businesses across Chesterfield have bonded together and it has been beautiful to see. People are being honest and helping each other, which provides a great environment for support and collaboration. The more we can have cross-sector conversations, the more we can continue to break down barriers.”

Cllr Tricia Gilby said: “It’s fantastic to see how businesses step forward when we ask them to – showing a real collective aspiration for our place and people. In terms of inward investment, businesses are always willing to come forward and support. We have seen a fantastic response to Destination Chesterfield’s call for new board members, and the appetite of businesses wanting to get involved in the new Chesterfield Town Board has been strong too.”

In addition, delegates at the Round Table explained how being located in Chesterfield, with its central location and proximity to several major cities, was helping to give them a strategic advantage.

Mel Archbould, Managing Director owner of Cloud-Busting, commented: “The location of our town is its greatest strength. We are in the centre of the UK, next to the M1. When the upcoming work has been carried out at the rail station to provide a great welcome to Chesterfield, I think it will be really exciting.”

Catherine Wenborn added: “You can get to up Scotland, or down as far as the south-west either on the train or by road. We’re pretty much bang in the centre, which I consider to be a huge advantage.”

The town’s location also enables businesses to tap into a wide talent pool, with an estimated 7 million people living within an hour’s commute of Chesterfield. Attendees at the Round Table pointed out how they were ensuring they made the most of local skills opportunities to help grow their organisations and create jobs.

Matt Killingley said: “We are working with local schools, trying to promote apprenticeships and we are looking to engage with the potential workforce in our area. Sometimes in business, it is easy to have aspirations you can’t actually enact, but stepping away and speaking to schools and universities helps to promote your business and engage with the next generation.”

Paul Chapman, Owner and Editor of S40 Local Magazine added: “The sense of community in Chesterfield is so different to anywhere else. Look at the links we have between businesses and educators, such as Chesterfield College and the University of Derby. If you’re looking for particular skills, they’ll speak to you and ask what you’re looking for. They’ll then train people up to help get people into jobs, which is excellent.”

Chesterfield Champions highlight local wellbeing support ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week

Chesterfield businesses are taking centre stage in championing mental health awareness.

Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 (13th -19th May), we’re shining a light on the proactive measures undertaken by our local organisations to nurture the well-being of their employees and residents across our town.

Chesterfield boasts a number of assets to support mental and physical wellbeing, including award-winning parks and green spaces, the town’s proximity to the Peak District National Park, and of course the overall sense of community and togetherness amongst our people. Did you know Chesterfield was recently ranked the happiest place to live in the East Midlands?

In our conversations with Chesterfield Champions, we explore the diverse ways in which businesses, public sector organisations and our local charity and voluntary sectors are fostering mental health awareness and support within our community.

Karlie Thompson, Associate Director of Communications at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS FT commented:  “Here at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, we are an anchor institute for the town and employ more than 5,000 colleagues; we are therefore a key player in the wider health and care system and we are committed to supporting mental health across all our partners.

“We pride ourselves on prioritising the health and wellbeing of our colleagues and our wider community. This includes our commitment to colleagues through 24/7 support services and a £2m Health and Wellbeing Hub with gym and counselling facilities on the hospital site to signage in ED which research shows reduces anxiety and worry as it explains what each section of the department does, what might happen to you in that area and who may treat you. We also have unique, tailored, sections of the department which are specifically designed to support those in mental health crisis.

“Help is there when people are in need and it takes many forms from reaching out through NHS111 to speaking to your doctor. The best place for people suffering with mental health is probably not our Emergency Department, equally, we would encourage anybody feeling they need support to reach out.”

Emily Bowman, Managing Director at Junction Arts said: “Wellbeing underlines everything we do at Junction Arts, when planning our events, festivals and projects we always consider how we can improve people’s mental wellbeing, whether that’s building young people’s confidence and self-esteem with our Six Pillars and Next Gen projects or combatting loneliness and isolation with our successful warm space, Cosy Crafts initiative earlier this year. We know that being creative and connecting with people can benefit our mental health.

“But mental health is not isolated to the communities we work in, it’s an important issue that can impact our team and volunteers – without them we can’t do the great work we do.  By talking more about our mental health we can dispel the stigma and misconceptions and encourage hope by sharing stories of recovery as well as the struggle.   The more we do this, the more chance there is for positive change.”

In support of staff mental health wellbeing, Fairplay are working closely with local charity RELATE, and Derby university students to offer counselling sessions for it’s employees.

Fairplay work hard to promote staff wellbeing and offer support to staff through supervisions and 1:1 meetings.  Fairplay have designated qualified Mental Health First Aiders who are available for support throughout the working week and also outside of working hours so that employees are able to reach out and talk to someone if they are struggling with their mental health wellbeing.

Fairplay’s HR Officer Nikki Lowe said: “supporting the wellbeing of our staff is very high on the agenda for Fairplay, and alongside internal support from qualified staff we are now working with local organisations to offer staff members additional support from external sources via RELATE counselling and level 5 trainee counsellor and psychotherapy students from Derby university.

“It is important that we all support one another, and to coincide with the counselling sessions being offered Fairplay have implemented a ‘mental health awareness process’ where all staff members have been given a badge with a green heart on which can be worn if they are having a particularly bad day or struggling with something, so that colleagues are aware that they are not feeling 100%.

“This visual aid will hopefully encourage staff members to be supportive of their colleagues and be a reminder to all that kindness costs nothing and a little ‘I’m here if you need me’ goes a long way.”

One of Chesterfield’s most picturesque locations, the Chesterfield Canal is an excellent way to boost your wellbeing.

You can enjoy a scenic walk along the towpath, have a quick drink or bite to eat at Holloingwood Hub, or even head out onto the water via a tranquil canal cruise or paddle boarding session.

Rod Auton, Scretary of Chesterfield Canal Trust said: “The Chesterfield Canal is seen as a safe and calm space by many local residents. Many come to Hollingwood Hub to visit Katey’s Coffee Shop, to sit in the beautiful gardens tended by volunteers and to enjoy a boat trip.

“Successive Covid lockdowns brought home to many of the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s volunteers just how important the companionship of being in a team and working for a common cause can be to enhancing one’s mental wellbeing.”

Earth Day 2024: Chesterfield businesses strive towards sustainability goals

Chesterfield businesses are highlighting how they are becoming more sustainable and playing their part in reducing carbon emissions, waste, and pollution.

Earth Day 2024 provides the perfect opportunity to showcase our businesses that are taking responsibility and looking after our corner of the world. Many companies across Chesterfield are implementing eco-friendly practices and innovative solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and minimise impact to the environment.

Several recent developments have indicated the town’s commitment to sustainability, including the recent office spaces at One Waterside Place and the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre. The former achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating, while the latter was rated Excellent.

Last month, Chesterfield Borough Council approved a new annual delivery plan that aims to ensure the council is a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 and that the borough is carbon-neutral by 2050. Investing in even more green vehicles, continuing to make council homes more energy efficient and making further progress towards decarbonising key council buildings – including leisure centres and the Town Hall – are among the actions set out in the council’s climate change plan for the coming year.

What’s more, future schemes such as the PEAK Gateway Resort will also be developed with sustainability in mind. PEAK’s masterplan includes a zero carbon carless mobility system offering day passes to visit the national park, and will generate its own energy on-site.

The town’s Property and Construction Group also regularly holds focused discussions on the subject of sustainability, enabling sector leaders to share knowledge and best practice.

At the heart of our business lies an unwavering commitment to sustainability across all our business operations- and we are increasingly finding this principle mirrored in clients’ priorities and decision-making too. We think about how our products sourced, produced delivered and even end-of-life recycling- the whole lifecycle is considered with eco-consciousness in mind.  Embracing local suppliers and UK-made products, and we are also now using more environmentally friendly UV link (rather than solvent inks)- and we are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint still further.  We have taken proactive steps transitioning our entire vehicle fleet to electric, with charging points at our headquarters. And our initiatives include a bee-friendly garden and encouraging a cycle commute with onsite showers. Solar panels power our HQs with plans for further expansion. This approach underscores our mission to promoting environmentally sustainability in all aspects of our mission.

We currently assemble about 1.5million patient prescription items each month. This means thousands of paper bags. With our new system, bags are made from compostable potato starch immediately decreasing paper use. Our workplace travel plan encourages car sharing, and use of electric vehicles, for delivery vehicles and staff cars. The movement sensor lighting in our building turns lights off when parts of the building are unoccupied. Where possible, waste generated on site is recycled and we continually look for ways to improve this further.

We’ve got a team of staff who are dedicated to continually improving our sustainability. We’ve recently invested in solar panels to take the bulk of our power demands. We constantly monitor power use and look to install devices and practices to reduce consumption. Our cardboard and plastic are all recycled from our warehouse, which amounts to quite a lot each year! Last year we completed our first carbon footprint assessment, setting clear targets to become carbon net zero by 2050.

Steps have been taken to reduce the use of electricity around the stadium, where possible. Chesterfield FC Community Trust deliver sessions in schools, outlining the importance of protecting the environment and advising how youngsters and their families can do their bit to become eco-friendly.

Legal Firms are historically very paper-heavy but in recent years we have made a real effort to reduce our paper trail, opting for online files and court bundles. This drive has been seen across the whole business and is probably the most significant change in our environmental footprint. We also conduct far more client meetings on the phone and online which saves them a trip to our offices, which means less traffic pollution.

One of our key priorities is environmentally conscious outsourcing to diminish our carbon footprint. We’ve partnered with ASK4 Data Centre, a facility powered entirely by renewable energy derived from wind, hydro, and solar sources. This strategic collaboration not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also provides our clients with tangible evidence of our dedication to eco-friendly practices. In addition to this, we actively participate in recycling electronic waste.

All the papers we use are FSC accredited, meaning they come from sustainable managed forests. All our waste paper and toner cartridges are either recyclable or sent back to be re-used. In our line of business, we believe it is important to educate customers on the process behind the print and try to ensure we are using processes which cause the least damage to our environment and reduce the amount of waste.

We responsibly recycle/reuse waste materials and emphasize overhauls and refurbishments over replacements whenever possible.

Sustainability is at the heart of our approach at Shed, and we are proud to have achieved ISO 14001 certification, a testament to our environmental responsibility. We’ve been proudly paper-free since 2019, reducing unnecessary waste and resource consumption. We’re also making strides in our vehicle fleet by adopting electric vans and company cars.

We make sure that all our tyres are sent to a recycling centre, where they can be made into astroturf, riding areas or re-used in construction materials. Eden have also made the switch to electric vehicles for the management team & have been working to install EV charges in the branches. A bike to work scheme has recently been introduced & we’ve got a workshop full of tools to keep our bikes in top condition. We also make sure our oil is disposed of properly.

“Here are a few improvements we have put in place at MSE to help make our business as sustainable as possible. We have a rainwater recovery system installed. The rainwater is stored in underground tanks where it is filtered and circulated throughout the workshop for further use on various applications such as our high-pressure wash bay. All our overhead lighting in the workshop has now been converted to energy efficient LED units. These units have built in motion sensors that turn off the LED’s when they are not required. We have also utilised our roof space by installing solar panels. These panels have proven to be incredibly efficient, halving our annual energy costs. In fact, the panels harvest so much energy that, in addition to our other energy recovery systems, it puts power back into the grid.”

Collaboration is key to unlocking jobs and growth, say Chesterfield business owners

A panel of Chesterfield business leaders has highlighted the ongoing collaboration and togetherness of the town’s organisations as a major contributor to our local economy.

Speaking to Destination Chesterfield and the Derbyshire Times at the Celebrate Local Round Table event, members of the town’s community of Chesterfield Champions spoke about how they see fellow businesses in the town as partners and colleagues, rather than rivals.

Businesses agreed that collaboration among local businesses in Chesterfield is a necessity for driving sustainable economic growth and prosperity. By building a vibrant community, enhancing knowledge and resilience, nurturing talent, and attracting investment, collaborative efforts lay the foundation for a thriving economy that benefits everyone in the town.

Drawing on her experience of owning a business in Chesterfield, Mel Archbould, of Cloud-Busting, a business dedicated to helping small and medium-sized businesses scale up and grow, commented:

“People just get on. It’s not ego-driven and people just get on with their business and build up those networks. It’s about creating an ecosystem and making sure it evolves and moves. We are all doing different things, but that symbiotic relationship is vital, in terms of how we feed off each other and work together. Collaboration between different industries, such as the public sector, private sector, education, healthcare, and voluntary organisations feed into giving our town its identity. We all need each other.”

Crucially, collaboration enables local businesses to tap into new markets and opportunities. By forming strategic partnerships and alliances, firms in our town can amplify their reach and visibility, helping to raise further regional and national awareness of Chesterfield’s offer to businesses, visitors and people searching for jobs and homes.

The round table discussion heard how companies in the town’s legal and financial sectors often refer clients to each other, in order to ensure local people and businesses are given the best specialist advice and care possible.

Ryan Wilkes, Senior Manager of Owner Managed Business, Shorts Chartered Accountants said: “We refer to lots of other places too. For any CVs that are not quite suited to us, we refer to smaller businesses in the town. We also do a lot of work with local solicitors, and we also do a lot of work alongside Mitchells Chartered Accountants who people on the outside would see as a competitor. When I look at the accounts of clients, you’d be surprised to see how many businesses in our town are linked. Everybody knows everybody.”

Moreover, collaborative efforts can enhance the overall attractiveness of Chesterfield as a destination for investment and entrepreneurship. This, in turn, can attract new businesses, spur job creation, and stimulate economic activity. In 2023, statistics showed that there were 580 more businesses operating in Chesterfield compared to figures measured 10 years previously. In addition, Chesterfield Borough Council’s growth strategy sets out ambitions to increase the number of businesses by another 12% by 2030, equating to another 400 businesses.

Paul Chapman, owner and editor of S40 Local Magazine, commented: I get to see lots of different businesses, ranging from small to large, and I have been blown away by the businesses I’ve found. I’m fortunate to have met some fantastic people who put their life and soul into what they’re doing. Love goes into what they do. We know that it has been hard times for many, but we all keep going. Through the magazine, it is my job to be positive, and as local business owners, we should try to lead by example by spending our money locally with an independent business.

“I bought my bike from a business in Sheepbridge. Our milkman gets his milk from fields in Tideswell. I regularly visit the local butcher, market stalls, and other local shops. For my wife’s 50th birthday party, everything was sourced within a couple of miles of Chesterfield. I think it is so important to think about where we get our products and services from.”

Furthermore, collaboration fosters resilience in the face of recent economic challenges being faced by businesses across the UK. Whether it’s navigating rising costs, adapting to new ways of working brought about by advances in technology, or helping to protect fellow businesses from falling victim to crime, a community of organisations that stands united is better equipped to handle any arising issues, making them more resilient.

It could be for a product launch, or if someone is looking for staff, we can send them some CVs across. If you are a one-person business, it can be quite lonely, so it is good to keep in touch. We find the community very supportive from a small business point of view.

“Also from a crime prevention standpoint, town centre businesses are working well together to create that community and make them aware of any potential threats or issues. Shopping locally with independent businesses helps to build our community as well as our economy. DBC Training announces move to larger Chesterfield premises

Skills and employability training provider DBC Training is expanding into larger Chesterfield premises, following successful growth in the town.

The organisation will move into new offices at Markham House in the centre of the town, allowing more learning space for the business to deliver its courses.

Commenting on the expansion of the business, Luke Brailsford, Senior Performance Manager at DBC Training said: “As a business we are growing, and we see Chesterfield as a key part of our growth plans. The investment in our new premises support this, offering more learning space for us to deliver high-quality employment and skills training courses in Chesterfield.

Bridge Help to match fund donations to its Chesterfield Foodbank Easter appeal

Bridge Help is calling on people to support its Childrens’ Chocolate Appeal.

Bridge Help wants to make sure that the children of everyone who accesses Chesterfield Foodbank’s services has a chocolate treat this Easter.

One hundred tasty chocolate eggs will be delivered by the Bridge Help team to the Chesterfield Foodbank warehouse in Sheepbridge in time for Easter.

As well Easter eggs, Bridge Help also wants to ensure the Food Bank charity gets a vital cash donation to contribute to its operation throughout the year.

To enable this, the company is asking people to make donations to its JustGiving appeal which will go directly to Chesterfield Foodbank. Bridge Help will also match fund donations.

Chris Sellars, Chief Executive of Bridge Help, explained: “The team and I really wanted to support a charity this Spring and Chesterfield Foodbank was the obvious choice, importantly, that there are also treats, especially for children, during difficult times.”

Bridge Help’s Chesterfield Foodbank Easter appeal is in place of its annual Christmas fundraising efforts, which has seen them donate nearly £12,000 to the Foodbank since 2020.

Chesterfield Foodbank provides three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis. They are part of a nationwide network of food banks, supported by The Trussell Trust, a charity which is working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

In 2023, Chesterfield Foodbank provided vital support to over 11,000 local residents in need of emergency food supplies. Of these three-day emergency food supplies, (just under a third (3169) were given to children.

Chris added: “Donations are needed throughout the year, not just at Christmas where we have previously focused our giving. Given the current economic climate and the predicaments many local people now find themselves, it is more important than ever to support this vital charity throughout the year.”

Graysons champions early breast cancer detection through podcast partnership

Graysons’ female staff have taken a leading role on the importance of self-examination as part of a new initiative to increase awareness of hereditary breast cancer.

Graysons is a firm renowned for championing the careers of female solicitors, and has teamed up with radio DJ, Becky Measures, and her mother, Wendy Watson MBE, on their new ‘Mother Daughter Breast of Friends’ podcast.

Various members of Graysons’ staff participated in an episode of the podcast dedicated to the importance of breast self-examination as a way to detect early signs of the disease.

Wendy Watson made history 30 years ago when she became the first woman in Britain to have both breasts removed in preventative surgery. Her daughter, Becky Measures, underwent the same procedure in 2004 after finding out she had an 80 to 90 percent risk of developing breast cancer.

97% of people who carry a faulty gene still don’t know and the show aims to raise awareness and navigate the complexities of genetics.

Bradie Pell, partner at Graysons, said: “With a significant number of female staff in our firm, this episode highlighting the importance of self-examination truly struck a chord with us. If our participation can inspire others to become more self-aware and detect any changes early on, then our partnership becomes even more meaningful.”

The Chesterfield FC Community Trust’s A Spire Right sessions are focusing on helping those who have a history of drug and alcohol misuse to get more physically active and do something positive with their lives.

Shane Nicholson, who had two spells with Chesterfield as a player, was banned from football from drugs and alcohol misuse himself and gave a speech to the group to share his story.

On visiting the group, Shane said: “It’s about me coming to share my testimony, sharing my experiences and how I’ve dealt with them, how I cope with it and how I didn’t cope with it.

“Hopefully, as we’ve heard today, three or four people can resonate to the story. Once they do that, they know it’s okay to open up and share their side of it.

“I’m no different to them. Whatever walk of life we’ve had, whether you’re a judge, whether you’re a footballer, whether you’re someone on the street, it’s irrelevant.

“Drink and drug addictions can take over your life, so these guys here, I needed to let them know that their story is just as important as mine.”

Shane made 92 appearances for the Spireites, scoring 13 times, before returning as a fitness coach after retirement.

Shane added: “I love to come here. The first time was when I came back sober and clean under the late John Duncan.

“Then obviously I came back as a player and later as a strength and conditioning coach where we had lots of success so I’ve got a big place in my heart for Chesterfield.”

Urging those in need to attend the group, Shane said: “Taking that leap of faith and sharing your worries, whatever it is you feel that isn’t worthy of talking about, share it with someone.

“It’s important. Certainly, as males, we don’t do it enough. We think we’ll be laughed at but get it out there and get it shared because once it’s out there, you’re not carrying that baggage on your back around with you.

“It makes your life a lot easier.”


Art supplies to improve the mental health of young people in Bolsover and North East Derbyshire

Local charity, Junction Arts is launching a new fundraising campaign this week to provide 100 art packs for young people in Bolsover and North East Derbyshire.

The campaign comes after the charity recognised the positive impact that creativity has on the mental health of young people aged 11-18 years, whilst working in schools in Bolsover and North East Derbyshire as part of its Six Pillars project.

Six Pillars supports the emotional health and wellbeing of young people via creative taster sessions and workshops, to help build confidence and develop skills. The young people involved in the project often encounter difficulties in traditional educational settings, sometimes finding social interactions to be challenging, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

During the regular meet-up sessions, the Junction Arts team saw the positive impact of being creative, which allows young people to channel and process their feelings, reducing stress and boosting their self-esteem.

Unfortunately, not all young people have access to the necessary art supplies to support their wellbeing needs and encourage their creative talents. So, the charity is asking people to donate and help them raise £3,000, so that they can distribute 100 art packs to Six Pillars young people before the end of this academic school year in July 2024. Each art pack includes a variety of high-quality art supplies, ensuring that every child has the tools they need to embark on their artistic journey.

Junction Arts Project Coordinator, Kylie North said: “We know that engaging in art has a profound impact on a young person’s emotional health and wellbeing, providing a therapeutic outlet for self-expression, fostering creativity, and promoting a sense of accomplishment that contributes positively to their overall mental and emotional development. One of our Six Pillars participants, who has autism and struggles with anxiety, has gone from barely speaking in a group situation to wanting to become a volunteer, their confidence and self-esteem has improved so much in just a few months of attending our sessions.”

“We want more young people to experience this so, we are on a mission to provide 100 art packs to young people within the Six Pillars programme, empowering them to unleash their creativity and explore the world of art. Your support can make a significant impact on their lives and open doors to new possibilities. Any donation, no matter how big or small will directly contribute to enriching these young lives in Derbyshire through the joy of art.”

Six Pillars is an arts and wellbeing programme, commissioned by Healthy North East Derbyshire Partnership and the Bolsover Partnership with funding from Derbyshire County Council. The Project is led by Junction Arts in partnership with Direct Education Business Partnership.

Spireites agree extended shirt sponsorship deal with Leengate Valves

An extended sponsorship deal has been agreed which will see the Leengate Valves logo continue to feature on the front of Chesterfield FC’s home and away shirts for the next two seasons.

Steve Pickering, managing director of Leengate Valves said: “We’ve done it for the last two years and are keen to keep the association going, with hopefully a return to the EFL during that time.

“We’ve received so much publicity in the last two seasons and it’s a good feeling to see so many shirts with Leengates Valves on around the town and whenever we go to away games.

“We’ve been associated with the club for so long – around 34 years now – and it’s been the highlight this year, really.

Charlotte brings more than 20 years’ experience in financial services to Chesterfield based Start FP.

Charlotte has experience of every level of financial planning. She began her career working as an administrator and progressed through roles in technical support to financial adviser and operations manager.

Green light for new road safety offering from Rodgers Leask

 

Chesterfield Property and Construction Group member, Rodgers Leask has unveiled a new Road Safety Audit (RSA) service as part of its transport planning capabilities, led by senior transport planner and road safety auditor Mike Dutton.

Banner Jones once again shortlisted in three categories at Sheffield & District Law Society Awards

Chesterfield-based regional law firm Banner Jones has once again been shortlisted for three awards at the upcoming Sheffield & District Law Society Awards, including Residential Property Team of the Year, and Employment Team of the Year.

Family Law Solicitor Lauren Mahon has also been nominated in the Rising Star category in recognition of her passion and commitment to providing advice to clients on all aspects of family law including divorce, finances and children arrangement orders.

The short listings mark another year of success for Banner Jones, which has won the Employment Team award for two consecutive years.

It’s conveyancing department, which is widely recognised for its customer service led approach and innovative use of technology, has also been shortlisted for the Residential Property of the Year Award in 2022 and 2023.

The winners of the awards will be announced at the annual awards ceremony which will take place on the 23rd of February at the historic Royal Victoria Hotel, Sheffield.

Roy Peters Estates’ George Glazebrook achieves distinction on Level 2 apprenticeship

George Glazebrook, who has been undertaking a Level 2 Housing and Property Management apprenticeship with Chesterfield’s Roy Peters Estates, has acheived the highest grade possible on his Level 2 course.

George commented: “I love working for Roy Peters Estates in Chesterfield, being in the industry at a young age is great as I’m always learning and gaining new skills. Surrounding myself with people who have lots of experience and knowledge within the industry is also extremely important to me as I would have not have these same opportunities within a class room.

I have just completed level 2 apprenticeship and was delighted that I achieved a distinction grade across all three elements of the examination, which was extremely rewarding as I had put a lot of hard work into the apprenticeship overall”.

Richard Sherwood, Director at Roy Peters Estates, added: “Everyone here at Roy Peters is delighted that George has passed his Level Two Qualification in Housing and Property Management. George has become a real asset to our business and I understand that he plans to move forward to Level Three which will give us another qualified member of our team.

Windowcharm Blinds & Curtain Services announces new content creator apprentice

Chesterfield’s Windowcharm Blinds and Curtain Services has added another apprentice to its growing team.

Romario Clarke is the third apprentice to join the company, and will be working alongside fellow apprentices Katie Wheatley and Matt Willis.

Mike Jones, Head of Customer Relations at Windowcharm commented: “Our experienced professionals from three departments will provide them with on-the-job training, mentorship, and support.

“Romario, Katie, and Matt have introduced new and innovative ideas to our business, which has been established since 1975.

“We are eager to guide them during the early years of their careers and see how their contributions will improve our productivity and performance.”

CMP Legal’s Amelia Bacon to undertake solicitor qualifying apprenticeship

Amelia Bacon, who has worked for Chesterfield’s CMP Legal for just over two years as a Paralegal in the firm’s corporate team, is set to take the next step in her career by taking on an apprenticeship to secure her SQE Qualifications.

The SQE is two exam papers set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Therefore, Amelia will be studying for her SQE while undertaking her apprenticeship, gaining the necessary qualifying work which she also needs to be able to qualify as a solicitor.

Amelia’s SQE course will be taught by the training provider with a series of online workshops, lectures and assessments as well as one to one support from a personal tutor. CMP Legal will be supervising her work experience and ensuring that she’s exposed to a wide variety of work to ensure that when she passes her SQE, she’ll be able to apply to the SRA to be admitted as a solicitor, straight away.

Amelia said: “I’m thrilled to be starting my solicitor qualifying apprenticeship and I’m very grateful that CMP Legal are supporting my career ambitions. I can’t wait to get started on the course in March.

Stacey Pocock, Solicitor and Executive Director at CMP Legal added: “The introduction of the SQE is a relatively new concept in the legal profession and so to be able to support Amelia with an apprenticeship is something that we were very keen to do. Chesterfield’s CCM Change Consultancy is currently working alongside two apprentices at Rosewood Wealth Management, to further develop their skills.

The two Chesterfield Champions have worked together, with CCM assisting the finance company’s rising stars Abigiail Dodd and Demi Walker, with assimilation into the workplace and development of fundamental tools. This work is providing a solid foundation for the apprentices to take on technical industry knowledge.

Businesses celebrate Chesterfield’s biggest successes from 2023

2023 has seen significant investment in Chesterfield, with sites including One Waterside Place, Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre, and Hartington Business Park all helping to grow our town’s economy.

Meanwhile, announcements of further developments in the town continue to drive forward economic activity, with multi-million pound projects set to get underway in Chesterfield and Staveley’s town centres. Planning permission has been submitted for the much anticipated Gateway @Peak development, giving visitors a base to explore Chesterfield and the Peak District.

With major progress being made across our town in 2023 and further ambitions for growth in 2024, the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have shared with us their biggest successes from the past 12 months.

Champions sponsor upcoming Champions Against Loneliness Awards

Two Chesterfield Champions, Magnavale and Hopkinson Waste Management have confirmed to sponsor two categories at the upcoming Brightlife Champions Against Loneliness Awards.

Scheduled to take place at the SMH Group Stadium on Saturday March 16th, 2024, the event will bring together local businesses, charities, volunteers and members of the public, at an awards evening designed to celebrate those members of society who have gone above and beyond in their actions to ensure that loneliness and isolation doesn’t occur amongst older people living within our communities.

Healthy Living project supports Staveley pupils

Students from Springwell Community College were taught how to make Butternut Squash soup by L3 catering students

A new project aims to provide Staveley school students with the skills to cook healthy meals at home.

Delivered in partnership by Community Growth, Chesterfield Borough Council, Chesterfield College, Springwell Community College and Netherthorpe School, the Staveley To Eat Well (STEW) project had its first session on Wednesday 8 November.

Students from Springwell Community College travelled to Chesterfield College where level 3 students in the Hospitality and Catering School taught them how to cook Butternut squash soup with sage and croutons.

Natalie Pearce, Co-Director at Community Growth, said: “It’s such a wonderful opportunity for students to have exposure to fully trained chefs and a professional kitchen. Inspiring and eye opening. The College staff are exceptionally welcoming. I’m honoured to be part of this innovative project.”

The concept initially arose through the Staveley Town Deal Board where members discussed how to tackle health inequalities in the town. The project has since been incorporated into Chesterfield Borough Council’s Skills Action Plan.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board said: “This is a fantastic project for young people in Staveley, it will help them develop important skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. This is also a great example of how partnerships formed through the Town Deal can help create more opportunities and help improve the quality of life for local people.”

Catering students at Chesterfield College will be working with their tutors to develop a meal to cook for each session and will lead these sessions for 15 students each time.

Julie Richards Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Chesterfield College said: “It’s so exciting to see the project finally come to fruition after initial ideas at the Town Deal Board meeting. I’m delighted to welcome students to Chesterfield College and hope it’s the start of a much bigger initiative for the town and local residents.”

Ian Wingfield, Headteacher of Springwell Community College and Town Deal Board member, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to get this project going, it will give our students a fantastic experience and help ensure they can develop some really useful skills that will benefit them for a long time to come.”

Further sessions are planned in 2024, in total around 72 students from both Springwell Community College and Netherthorpe School will take part in the project.

Funding for the project was secured through the Staveley Health and Wellbeing Group.


Chesterfield solicitor lights up Bolsover Castle with ‘Fame, Fashion, and Fortune’ exhibition

Legal eagle-by-day, Lacey Bates-Blinkho, has been helping bring a taste of Christmas past to Bolsover Castle.

She has become a key figure in the Fame, Fashion and Fortune project which is now on display until the end of January 2024.

The touring exhibition – which is set to visit various stately homes and museums in the region in the coming months – is sponsored by Lacey’s firm, Graysons Solicitors.

Various members of staff have been part of a team of volunteers working tirelessly to re-create the costumes worn by the influential women connected with Bolsover, stretching right back to Bess of Hardwick.

Fame, Fashion, and Fortune has attracted nearly £50,000 in National Lottery Funding and is being coordinated by Bolsover Parish Church.

CSLAS recieves donation from DCJ Group Insurance & Risk Management

A four-figure donation to Chesterfield charity, CSALS has been made by DCJ Group Insurance & Risk Management to help boost fundraising efforts.

CSALS provide free online first aid training with over 11,000 people having completed the Prepared to Save a Life course, which is offered in partnership with Virtual College. Practical sessions are also delivered in schools and at companies that support the organisation’s 999 Appeal.

Business invited to College Santa Dash event

Chesterfield College’s Santa Dash is set to return this Christmas, in support of Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice 

The event takes place on 15th December, and all students, staff and local businesses are welcome.

The Santa Dash will be taking place at Queens Park at 9:30 am to start the warm-up at 9:45 am.

The event itself is three laps of the park which can be run, jogged or walked dressed in festive attire (Christmas jumpers, Santa costumes, etc. or wearing purple to show support for Bluebell Wood) to raise as much money as possible for the charity whilst being together and having a fun-filled morning at the same time.

Sports students will lead the warm-up from the college while the college’s Public Services students will marshal the route. There will be prizes for:

  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers
  • Most money raised
  • Best dressed individual
  • Best dressed team

The College is asking local businesses to help in any way they can, be it by entering a team for the event and raising sponsorship money or donating prizes. Details following the event will be published on the Chesterfield College website and social media platforms including any details/social media tags of all businesses involved.

BHP Supports the Elm Foundation with charity advent calendars

The BHP Chartered Accountants team in Chesterfield have been collecting advent calendars for children currently living in a domestic abuse refuge house based in the town.

The refuge is run by The Elm Foundation, which runs four such safe houses for men, women and children.

A total of 38 advent calendars have now been donated to the children in the refuge.


Vicar Lane Opens Food Bank this Festive Season

To support Chesterfield Foodbank, Vicar Lane is taking part in the ‘Let’s Can Hunger’ campaign once again, to support those most in need within the community this Christmas.

From Monday 4th December until Thursday 21st December, visitors can contribute by donating to either of the food banks in Iceland or the Vicar Lane Centre Management Suite.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appealing to businesses, organisations and communities to help give the ‘gift of extraordinary’ this Christmas through the Chesterfield Royal Charity.

Dr Hal Spencer, Chief Executive, explained: “Our Christmas wish this year is to show our patients and colleagues that they truly matter through a small act of kindness. Our goal is to always provide exceptional care and look after the health and wellbeing of our people. One of the ways we’d like to do this is by offering small gifts, paid for by the Chesterfield Royal Charity.

“We already have plenty of kind donations and from community organisations bringing gifts in – such as motorcycle clubs bringing appropriate gifts children but this year, we’re wanting to make it even more exceptional and we’re launching a last-minute appeal for kind gestures from local businesses and organisations.

“We know it’s a difficult time for many people and it’s important to not go above your means, so please do only donate if you’re able. As they say; every little helps!”
