Manufacturing companies urged to get involved with Made in Chesterfield

Engineering and manufacturing companies in Chesterfield and north east Derbyshire are being called on to make a difference to the future of young people and get involved with Made in Chesterfield taking place in November later this year.

Festival organiser Destination Chesterfield is now urging companies to put themselves forward and get involved with the school and business events that will be taking place throughout the month.

This year Made in Chesterfield has been extended from a week to a month, providing even more opportunity for the town’s manufacturing and engineering companies to ignite career interest in the sector from young people.

Last year a number of companies took part in the first ever Made in Chesterfield which took place over a week in November. United Cast Bar Ltd, Franke Sissons Ltd, MSE Hiller, Penny Hydraulics, Corregated Case Company, Kingfield Electronics, FieldCandy, and Magnifica Technologies Ltd, offering tours of their facilities, competitions, events and workshops with schools and students.

Ivan Fomin, managing director of MSE Hiller and Destination Chesterfield board member responsible for manufacturing and engineering, said: “The support of companies in the sector is vital to the success of Made in Chesterfield. Manufacturing is the lifeblood of the economy, feeding other sectors such as retail and leisure and its continuing success relies on today’s students considering it for a future career. Made in Chesterfield is designed to open their eyes to this and show them the varied job roles available and also how the sector has changed. However, we can only this of companies come forward and actively get involved.”

Last year Ivan’s company took an active role in Made in Chesterfield Week and invited a number of schools to tour the firm’s Markham Vale £3million purpose-built premises.

If your company would like to get involved with Made in Chesterfield, please contact Dominic Stevens on 01246 207207 or email dom.stevens@chesterfield.co.uk.

New jobs created at Chesterfield Accountants

Chesterfield Champion Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers is set to create five new jobs after a period of impressive growth.

Mitchells, which is based on Saltergate in Chesterfield, has reported a rise in turnover in recent years with an underlying year-on-year increase of more than 10 per cent. It is also reporting a volume of new clients in the last three months, unlike anything it has experienced since 2008.

Growth, since the beginning of the year, has been unprecedented for the firm. It is reporting more than 300% growth in transactional financial due diligence assignments, which is attributed, in part, to the end of the recession and business owners being ready to move to the next level, either selling or growing their business.

Andrew McDaid, Partner at Mitchells, explained: “For a long time we have always believed that Accountants cannot simply be bean counters, businesses want advice. We are seeing a lot of new clients who are coming to us out of frustration. They want to move their business to the next level but don’t know how. We can give that practical help by structuring deals or accessing finance or grants on their behalf enabling them to invest in equipment or technology which can enable growth.”

Mitchells is involved in financial due diligence in respect of share purchases/sales, asset purchases/sales and grants as well as share valuations and expert witness work, acting for both buyers and sellers in these transactions. In 2015 the firm completed the same number of transactions in a three month period than it would ordinarily undertake in a year.

Andrew explained the growth in this area: “Coming out of the recession many businesses have found themselves at a crossroads. They might have been poised for sale prior to the recession and that impacted on the value of the business and then the lack of available finance reduced buyers in the marketplace. Now banks and other finance providers are lending again and business owners are ready to push ahead with the plans they may have had before the recession.”

The Mitchells business model has always involved budgeting to have over-capacity in terms of staffing hours. This, together with its use of award winning technology to improve business performance, ensures the firm continues to provide a quality service to clients.

To meet increased client demand, the firm will be employing a further three qualified accountants, an undergraduate placement and an AAT apprentice position by the end of 2015, who will join the 35-strong team.

Andrew said: “It may be a bold statement, but I believe that businesses have never had it so good. There are a myriad of financial incentives in the marketplace right now and I encourage many of our clients, who are focussed on growth, to consider taking advantage of the low interest rates, low inflation, government schemes to encourage apprenticeships, employer allowances and grant funding.”

Chamber Calls for Clarity Over Fresh Cuts

Chamber Calls for Clarity Over Fresh Cuts

Chancellor George Osborne today announced an additional £3bn of Government spending cuts for this year, including £450m from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and £545m from the Department for Transport (DfT).

He also announced plans to sell the Government’s remaining 30% stake in Royal Mail, expected to raise an extra £1.5bn to help decrease the nation’s debts.

George Cowcher, Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), said: “Many businesses were expecting a further round of cuts to public expenditure in the wake of an election which returned a Conservative majority. This will put even more pressure on the private sector to expand and create the jobs, wealth and, in turn, tax revenues required to fund the public services the UK wants and needs.

“Over the past five years, businesses, particularly here in the East Midlands, have done much of the heavy lifting to get the economy back on its feet. They stand ready to do so again and take on the challenge of helping to achieve the Chancellor’s vision of making the Midlands the UK’s ‘Engine for Growth’.

“With this in mind, the Government should, without delay, provide additional clarity on exactly where the axe will fall, particularly in relation to the planned cuts to the BIS and DfT budgets, in order to minimise uncertainty and create the stability businesses need to thrive.

“Business wants a plan for fiscal consolidation which is carefully balanced with the overriding need to nurture investment, job creation and growth. Investing in increasing productivity and business growth, coupled with preventative measures to control costs while interest rates are historically low, is likely to reduce the structural deficit faster than slashing spending too deeply.

“Although the deficit still needs to be eliminated, growth, not austerity, should now be the watchword.”George Cowcher Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber

More new jobs to be created at Markham Vale

A further 20 new jobs are set to be created in Chesterfield as Meter Provida prepare to move to Markham Vale.

Work has already started to build a new 40,000 square feet unit for the firm which supplies gas, water and electric metering products and services for home, commercial and industrial use nationwide for suppliers such as British Gas.

Tim Houtby, managing director at Meter Provida said:

“We are very excited to move to Markham Vale. We’re seeing a significant increase in interest in the services and products we supply as the UK moves closer to the nationwide Smart Meter Rollout, and our bigger premises will help us to attract more business by increasing our product range which means creating more jobs.

“Location was an important factor for us when looking for a new base. We needed good access to major transport routes but wanted to stay local to minimise disruption for our existing staff, making Markham Vale the perfect choice.”

Meter Provida which is based at Broombank Business Park in Chesterfield is expected to open new premises at Markham in November this year.

Chambers Join Forces to Press Chancellor on HS2

Chambers of Commerce representing more than 11,000 businesses in the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East have today written a joint letter to the Treasury, urging Chancellor George Osborne to bring forward the confirmation and delivery of the Eastern Leg of HS2.

The letter, which has been signed by the Presidents and Chief Executives of the chambers for Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, Doncaster, Sheffield, the North East and Bradford, Leeds, York and North Yorkshire, says it’s imperative that Government confirms the route as quickly as possible and accelerates its delivery plans.

It refers to research undertaken by professional services firm KPMG in 2013, which suggested the proposed leg, linking Birmingham with Leeds via the East Midlands and Sheffield and then further north through a direct connection to the East Coast Main Line, has the potential to deliver a GDP impact of £4.1bn for the East Midlands, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

The Chancellor was in Derby on Monday, where he unveiled his vision to make the Midlands an ‘Engine for Growth’ in the UK. He said that HS2 is “the great engineering project of our age and it will transform the economic geography of our country.”

He also said that it will “bring massive benefits to the Midlands by way of new jobs, enhanced connectivity, capacity and regeneration.”

And Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin yesterday (2 Jun) said that the HS2 project will begin within two years and will be constructed in full, after the general election had delivered a “massive vote of confidence” in the scheme.

The areas along the proposed Eastern Leg of HS2 are already home to some of the UK’s most dynamic and innovative manufacturing and engineering firms, and also boast a strong professional services sector in their cities, a thriving construction sector and a burgeoning creative industries sector, among others.

The letter states that improving links between these businesses will allow them to exploit the benefits of agglomeration, boost success in these key sectors and help to forge an economy that is truly balanced, both geographically and sectorally.

The increased productivity and competitiveness which the HS2 Eastern Leg will facilitate could also bolster growth locally and support long-term international success.

Chris Hobson, Head of Information and Representation at East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), said: “HS2 is the single-biggest transformational transport infrastructure project in generations and represents a huge opportunity for businesses in the East Midlands. It will bring the capacity and connectivity that will help underpin the region’s future success, so it must deliver for the whole region.

“As representatives of more than 11,000 businesses along the proposed Eastern Leg, we are calling on the Chancellor to proceed to delivery of HS2 without delay, ensuring the legal framework is completed as soon as possible and the groundwork is done to enable the concurrent development of the Eastern and Western Legs of Phase 2.

“The creation of a new economic powerhouse in the north, to complement the well-established one in the south, places further emphasis on ensuring north-to-south connectivity for this region, the ‘Engine for Growth’ which provides the UK with its manufacturing spine.

“However, uncertainty kills confidence.  It is imperative that Government confirms the route as soon as possible and that delivery plans are accelerated to maximise the business benefits which come with creating a national rail network that can compete with the best in the world and create the opportunities needed for long term economic growth.”

It is a very exciting time for Mitchells.”
