Perez motorsport family take on R.A.C rally

Chesterfield’s Perez motorsport family take to the Welsh forests  this weekend as they turn out in force to compete in the Roger Albert Clark Rally.

The family team of father Steve Perez and his 18 year old son Seb Perez will take to the mud and tricky conditions for the 4 day rally that starts on Friday and finishes next Monday at Kielder Waterside.

The Perez duo start the rally in two different rally cars, 2014 and 2010 BTRDA Gold Star Rally Champion Steve Perez will compete in his stunning Lancia Stratos HF rally car that has been in action throughout the year on many European Historic Rallies

The Stratos will thrill rally fans from far afield, the R.A.C being the ideal event to bring the car back to the forests of Britain.

Seb will take to the forests in a Mk2 Ford Escort that he was out on the Wales Rally GB just under two weeks ago that saw him finish 22nd and 4th in his class on the National Rally that ran alongside the World Rally Championship event.

Rallying and Motorsport is not new to the family, Perez junior started competing in the Kick Energy Junior 1000 Rally Championship at the wheel of a Nissan Micra rally car back in 2013 before moving to circuit racing,

During the last 3 years he has been busy circuit racing in Ginetta Juniors and last year finished tenth overhaul in Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup Championship 2017, his first year and the bigger and faster race cars.

Father Steve has been a rally driver now for over 20 years and has also tried circuit racing too, this year alone has seen Steve finish second on the Rallye Vall de Sant Pere on the Balearic Islands in his Ford Focus RS WRC 04 in September and take third and first in class in Oris Rally Clásico-Puerto Portals Mallorca in March as well numerous European Historic Rally Championship events in the Stratos HF

Both rally cars at the weekend will be sponsored by dads Chesterfield’s Global Brands business and Amigos Tequila Flavoured Beer.

Both Father and Son Steve and Seb were amongst the first competitors to confirm they would take part in the rally back in January 2017

The rally that recreates The famous RAC Rallies of the 1970’s and Steve Perez has been a loyal supporter of the rally and originally had his Lanca Stratos built in order to contest the event some years ago.

Perez said ” “It’s a great format rally and whilst  in Europe i have told many people about the rally,” he said. “Lots of people talk still about the R.A.C. Rally”

He added ” “It’ll be  one of Seb’s first major gravel rallies in the Escort after doing Wales Rally GB last month, He followed me doing it in the Stratos for many years and he’s really excited about doing it himself.”

The rally dates back to 2004 in the name of the famous rally driver of the same name in his honour who was a British rally driver during the 1960s and ’70s, and the first competitor from his country to win a World Rally Championship (WRC) event when he triumphed at the 1976 RAC Rally

Competitors are limited to vehicles released prior to 1982, and traces a route through stages in Scotland and northern England which are no longer part of the modern itinerary

Before the rally heads into the Welsh forests, the cars will tackle two special stages on the famous Shelsley Walsh hill climb course. It is believed to be the first time in the venue’s 112-year history that it has been used competitively downhill.

After that the rally moves into the forests with well know rally stages including Radnor, Epynt, Kielder, Twiglees and Falstone, the cars will compete over 4 days and nights with 32 special stages.

The event includes 44 miles in Wales on Friday, 95 miles in Southern Kielder on Saturday, 94 miles in Scotland on Sunday and a final sting in the tail of 68 miles in the central block of Kielder on Monday morning. The concluding leg will feature two 20-mile and two 12-mile stages making it the longest special stage rally in Britain for 22 years

Not since the 1995 Network Q RAC Rally, which featured 317 stage miles, has a UK special stage rally taken in 300 stage miles. The current Wales Rally GB has a competitive route of around 200 stage miles.

You can follow all the rally action over the weekend on the event website www.racrally.org and keep an eye on how the Perez duo are doing.

Chamber announces new President at AGM

East Midlands Chamber has announced Robert Mayo as its President for 2017/18.

He received the chains of office from outgoing President Geoff Poyzer at the Chamber’s annual general meeting this morning.

Robert is Development Director at Nottinghamshire’s historic Welbeck Estate, with responsibility to bring about the transformation of one of the most significant groups of listed buildings in the East Midlands.

He is a graduate in Art History from the University of Nottingham (1986-89) and has a Masters degree in Conservation Studies from the University of York.

Robert trained and qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and has spent much of his career involved in the regeneration of historic buildings.

Prior to his appointment at the Welbeck Estate, Robert led the Heritage Lottery Fund-financed Piece Hall Transformation Project, in Halifax, a Grade I listed building and the last of the great northern cloth halls.

As well as being a Director at East Midlands Chamber, Robert is Chair of the D2N2 Rural Reference Group, Vice-Chair of North Notts BID and a Director of St Leger Homes.

He is also Place Chair at the North Notts Business Improvement District, or BID, the first of its kind in the country as it will cover the whole of the district of Bassetlaw instead of being limited to a very small area. It will have a budget of £3.5m over five years if successful.

“I would like to extend my personal thanks to Geoff Poyzer, my predecessor, for choosing me as his deputy for the past year and for all his hard work during his 12 months in office.

“I promise to uphold the dignity of this office and to be the best ambassador that I can be for the Chamber, for the region and for business generally.”

Robert has said he has four areas on which he wants to focus during his year in office – Brexit, helping local firms to begin their export journey, the region’s rural economy and promoting the North Notts BID.

Kevin Harris, a partner at international audit, tax and consultancy firm RSM, has been appointed as Vice-President for the year.

He is a strong advocate of Leicestershire and a prominent member of the local business community. He has worked in the accountancy profession for more than 30 years since graduating from university and obtained an MBA in 2004.

Kevin is a ‘hands-on’ business adviser who works closely with the management and shareholders of privately-owned businesses to help deliver their corporate and personal objectives, specialising in helping businesses to determine and execute corporate strategy.

As a strong communicator and being action-orientated, Kevin is used to working alongside a diverse group of people to get things done. He was part-owner of a successful regional accountancy practice before joining RSM in Leicester this year as a Partner.

Kevin is Vice-Chair of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) and has been heavily involved in helping to attract significant inward investment into Leicestershire in recent years.

Board changes announced at the AGM include Directors Dawn Edwards, James Bowie, Stuart Dawkins and Jaffer Kapasi, who were due to retire by rotation this year, being re-elected unopposed and the formal appointment to the Board of Eileen Richards, Martin Rigley and Lindsey Williams, all of whom were co-opted earlier in the year.

Board members retiring having completed their permitted term under the Chamber’s governance rules were Russell Thompson and Past-Presidents Jean Mountain, Ian Greenaway, David Merifield and Richard Wilkins.

Phil Stanyer, Chair of the Board of Directors, said:-

“I’m delighted to formally welcome Eileen, Martin and Lindsey to the Board. They each possess skills, knowledge and experience that will be of great value to the Chamber.

“And I want to express my extreme gratitude to Russell, Jean, Ian, David and Richard, who have all been loyal and devoted supporters of the Chamber and I hope will continue to be our good friends.”

Also at the event, two local business were presented with their British Chambers of Commerce East Midlands Regional Awards. They were Mansfield-based R.E.A.L Education, which won the Education and Business Partnership Award, and Retford-based iCON Aerospace, which won the High Growth Business of the Year Award.

Both were winners of the same categories at this year’s East Midlands Chamber Business Award. Later this month they will discover if they have been successful in the national finals of the BCC Awards.

From Circuit to Rally for Perez

Chesterfield’s Ginetta race ace car driver Seb Perez swapped from circuit to forest tracks last weekend with a return back to his grass roots in motorsport when he competed in Dayinsure Wales Rally GB.

Perez who finished tenth overhaul in Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup Championship 2017 last month took to the wheel of a Ford Escort Mk2  to compete amongst over 88 entries in the national event and a round of the FIA World Rally Championship that it ran alongside.

Perez with co-driver Steve Smith wasted no time getting used to the very slippery Welsh forest stages and gained vast experience during the three day event that started last Friday from the Ceremonial Rally Start in Chester.

The real rally got to grips on Saturday morning at Deeside and saw them tackle the first World Rally 1.12 mile stage at Cholmondelly Castle, first of 8 special rally stages throughout the day and Sunday.

47th car off the start line saw the Cholmondelly stage to be very slippery for their first encounter on gravel as well as part tarmac apart from testing and practice before the rally started a few weeks ago, they finished the stage 50th and a top ten class position around 13 seconds behind the leader

The rest of Saturday saw them into the Welsh forests that usually prove very demanding and had all seen before them the World Rally car rip the surface up making it difficult in places  The next 3 stages were Aberhirnant, Dyfnant and by the end of Gartheiniog stage the going was tough but didn’t stop the dynamic duo finishing in 28th place..

Next up was SS13 Dyfi another very well known rally stage from the RAC Rally days that had caught out many World Rally driver in its time, not for Perez and Smith who were going from Strength to strength finishing the stage in 25th place and fourth in class to return to the Deeside Service Area  for the overnight rest before further mud soaked racing on Sunday morning. Only 8 seconds parted them from rally leader Thomas Preston and Andrew Roughead in their Skoda Fabia R5

Sunday saw three more demanding tricky forest rally stages, first up was Gwydir, making up a further two places and in 23rd place and by the end of the last two stages of Alwen and Brenig the young Chesterfield pair passed over the Llandudno finish in 22nd and 4th in their class of car

Perez commented afterwards ” we both really enjoyed the event, it was very different to what I have been used too, we progressed from stage to stage bearing in mind the stages had been used by the WRC cars earlier and some of the stages showed big signs of wear and tear”

He added ” we kept the car where it was going in some slippery conditions gaining places on every stage and foumd it useful for the forthcoming outing on the Roger Albert Clark Rally in a couple of weeks time”

Later this month (10-13 November) both Seb and Father Steve Perez tackle the Roger Albert Clark Rally based around the forests of Kielder, Scotland and the Lake District.

Both sponsored by dads Chesterfield’s Global Brands business and Amigos Tequila Flavoured Beer, sees Seb in a Ford Escort again and Steve in his European Rally winning classic Lancia Stratos

Motor sport is no stranger to Perez Jnr, son of 2014 BTRDA Gold Star Rally Champion Steve Perez, Seb started competing in the Kick Energy Junior 1000 Rally Championship at the wheel of a Nissan Micra rally car back in 2013 before moving to circuit racing.

Currently Perez Junior is eyeing up opportunities for the 2018 racing season as well and has been seen behind the wheel testing at Donington Park last week in a Porsche Carrera GT race car
