I’ve driven the old Carrera and also the new one so it was interesting to compare them”, He added ” It’s fantastic to drive and is a massive step up from the Ginetta with the power and straightforward speed”

“I think I’m going to do the Pro-Am class, it’s a good place to start and will give me familiarisation with the car, being with Team Parker an incredibly experienced team with lots of years in these cars under their belt”

Chesterfield based architects appointed for ambitious regeneration scheme

Chesterfield Champions, Whittam Cox Architects, have been appointed as the first design practice in the Sheffield City Region to play a key role in the transformation of Park Hill.

The practice are working on proposals for phase three of the ambitious regeneration scheme that will add student accommodation to the mix of commercial and other residential uses at the Grade II listed high rise blocks.

Based at Sheepbridge, Chesterfield, Whittam Cox Architects are building a growing student housing portfolio across the UK, alongside contracts for major residential, commercial and leisure developments.

At Park Hill, they introduced student specialist Alumno Developments to regeneration company Urban Splash in a partnership that will deliver 350 student bedrooms for occupation in the 2020/21 academic year.

The student phase is being designed around groups of predominantly four and eight bedrooms with a range of unit sizes to offer students a spectrum of rents to suit different budgets.  Units will have shared living space in a unique three-storey ‘townhouse’ model that will add a distinct yet complementary neighbourhood to Park Hill.

Nick Riley, Board Director at Whittam Cox Architects commented:-

“Park Hill is captivating and infectious; its original design has timeless value and integrity architecturally. Our responsibility is to interpret what is there and create a design response which ensures a long-term future for the fabric of this historically important asset, whilst also seeking to promote a sustainable and diverse community. Being part of the Park Hill story is a genuine privilege for us, especially as so many of our team and their families live in the city.”

David Campbell, Managing Director at Alumno also commented:-

“This is a special project and we are very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the regeneration of Park Hill. The Estate has an amazing historical structure and importance for Sheffield, and we would like to make a positive contribution to its vibrancy and future life.”

Mark Latham, Regeneration Director of Manchester-based Urban Splash, added:-

“We always intended to create a mixed community at Park Hill. With the first phase complete and fully occupied we now have hundreds of people from mixed backgrounds and all ages living and working at Park Hill. We are so pleased to see a mutual respect and support reflected in the events and activities they create together with other residents in the area. We look forward to students being a significant and positive part of that community.”

Royal commits to Dying to Work Charter

The Chesterfield Royal Hospital has made an official pledge to protect colleagues who become terminally ill at work.

Building on work that was already taking place, the Trust has signed the Dying to Work Charter, part of the TUC’s wider campaign to protect the rights of workers given a terminal diagnosis, ensuring that they can’t be dismissed against their will as a result of their condition.

The campaign began in 2016 following a Cancer diagnosis received by sales manager Jacci Woodcock in Derbyshire three years ago who subsequently lost her job. The Charter recognises that work can be a welcome, therapeutic distraction and this pledge ensures the Trust’s support for such employees to choose the best course of action for themselves and their families without undue financial loss.

The Charter was first brought to the Trust’s attention through its Health and Wellbeing Committee and was referred to the Staff Partnership Committee (SPC), representing the Trust’s workforce, and driven forward with the considerable help of the Palliative Care Team and its lead Consultant Dr David Brooks. It replicated a lot of work that the Trust had already done for its workforce and SPC Chair, Sarah Harrington-Pollock, took it to the Committee for approval.

Sarah said:-

“We heard about the Charter and felt that it fitted very well with the Trust’s values. It puts into words some of the things that the Trust does anyway and, in signing the charter and displaying it on the corridors of the hospital, it allows us to make that commitment in a very visual and public way.

“We’re highly committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of our staff and the committee, along with the SPC, has a very strong and practical presence within the Trust. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to get the backing of hospital leaders and this should be a message to any of our colleagues who receive the worst news that you will be supported and that your continued employment is not something that you need to worry about.”

Lee Barron, Midlands Regional Secretary for the TUC, said:-

“Your job should be the least of your worries when you get a terminal diagnosis. I’m delighted that Chesterfield Royal Hospital has shown real leadership in this area, working with unions to guarantee fair treatment for terminally ill workers.

“Around 600,000 workers are now covered by the Dying to Work Charter across the country, and we expect more employers to commit in the coming months.”

Chesterfield Champions UKATA marks ten years of training the nation

In January 2018, Chesterfield Champions UK Asbestos Training Association marks a decade since the Association was first established to manage training providers for licenced asbestos work and monitor standards.

The last ten years have seen profound changes for both UKATA and the wider world and while enormous strides have been made in asbestos training and awareness in the last decade, more remains to be done.

UKATA is marking ten years of asbestos training and safety with a series of special events and initiatives throughout 2018, including a special AGM, awards, additional charity work and an expansion of the Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe campaign, which has already delivered thousands of hours of free asbestos awareness training across the country to those who otherwise have been unable to access it.

Craig Evans, General Manager at UKATA, said:-

“In January 2008, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) passed responsibility for managing the list of training providers for licenced asbestos work to UKATA, tasking us with monitoring training standards.

“Ten years on, UKATA has evolved from the original brief to fill the vacuum that existed in asbestos training, to offer our support and expertise to educate the nation on asbestos awareness.”

Back in 1999, asbestos was banned after the Government pledged to “deal effectively with the problems of asbestos”, but eight years on, millions of public buildings still contained the substance. The HSE Asbestos Training Providers’ Working Group (ATPWG) directed training enquiries to available providers but it was clear more needed to be done. The need for change was recognised and the formation of a training body was suggested, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Craig added:-

“Until asbestos related deaths are consigned to history, UKATA has a key role to play until asbestos is consigned to history.

“A decade down the line, asbestos remains a hidden killer, despite the latest HSE figures for 2015 showing over 5,000 asbestos related deaths keeping asbestos in top spot as the biggest killer in the UK workplace. UKATA has built on the vision of our founders to improve the wider health and safety landscape. Yet with these figures projected to remain the same for the next decade, now is the time to redouble efforts to seeing a significant fall in the number of deaths from asbestos related illnesses like mesothelioma.”

UKATA is the leading authority for asbestos training provision in the United Kingdom. Tasked by the HSE in 2008 to manage the licensed asbestos training providers, UKATA has gone from strength to strength and now has over 180 member organisations from all corners of the UK.

Chesterfield College receive grant to develop Digital Skills Hub

World-class facilities for high-level technical education in the Sheffield City Region (SCR) today received a boost of more than £1.2million in a bid to improve productivity across the region.

Five grants have been approved by the Combined Authority for education centres to purchase advanced equipment needed for learning in science, technology, engineering, and maths – known as ‘STEM’. These higher skills are badly needed in the digital, automotive and construction sectors.

Chesterfield College receives £243,000 to develop a Digital Skills Hub which will teach software, games, networking and hardware development, and develop digital content for college programmes. Over 10 years this will support 5,700 learners with 2,300 estimated to find work subsequently, and provide a £38milion boost to the economy.

Nigel Brewster, Vice Chairman of the SCR’s Local Enterprise Partnership, said:-

“This is a massive boost to productivity across the City Region. Our ethos is about creating jobs and economic growth, and these are just the sort of schemes that will continue putting our economy back on its feet.

“They’re practical, and they are in areas where they will produce results. We’ve worked closely with our partners to underpin their drive to make courses dynamic and fit for the future. We’re providing the equipment for hands-on skills learning.

“It’s an intelligent way to put our funding to use. In the Sheffield City Region, we get things done in an honest, no-nonsense way – this is helping us to build a truly competitive centre of business excellence.”

The Combined Authority also agreed to give £500,000 to Sheffield Hallam University to increase space and equipment for 10,800 learners on digital degree apprenticeship courses over a decade, generating £50million for the economy and seeing an estimated 2,300 being employed subsequently. The university plans to be a ‘business ready’ institution and to launch a centre of excellence for degree apprenticeships.

Students at the RNN Group, (which includes North Notts, Dearne Valley and Rotherham colleges), will soon be working ‘hands-on’ on the futuristic technologies of hybrid and electric vehicles thanks to a £185,000 grant. This will help to fill a shortfall in skilled technicians and provide opportunities for adults looking to re-train or upskill.

The National Fluid Power Centre in Worksop won £132,500 for equipment which will help students receive more in-depth technical training on the advanced integrated systems (combining hydraulics, pneumatics, electronic and controls) used in manufacturing, packaging, control technologies, sensor technology and online monitoring.

And The Sheffield College has been awarded £154,700 to purchase specialist equipment to answer the increased demand in the construction industry for higher level skills in estimating, design, quantity surveying, and site supervision, plus digital ‘literacy’. Some funding will go to simulation software such as a virtual reality welder, and pneumatic and hydraulic simulation.

Schools ticket initiative launched for European Under-17s Championship in May

England will host the UEFA European Under-17 Championship for the first time this summer with Chesterfield being one of the host towns.

UEFA tournament ambassador Nathaniel Chalobah visited Outwoods Primary School in Burton-upon-Trent on Wednesday.

The event was held to launch the ticketing campaign aimed at attracting local school children to the matches and mark 100 days to go before the competition begins.

The tournament will be played between Friday 4 May and Sunday 20 May, across 10 match days at six venues: Rotherham United, Chesterfield, Burton Albion, Walsall, St. George’s Park and Loughborough University.  Chesterfield will host the opening game, 2 groups games, a quarter final and a semi final match.

School friendly early kick-off times at 1pm will be played at each stadium to give children a unique opportunity to watch the stars of the future on their doorstep.

Tickets for children are only £2 and accompanying teachers/adults go for free.

Watford star Chalobah, who made 97 youth appearances for England and won the U17s European Championship in 2010 said: “It’s great for England to host a European Championship on home soil.

“There are lots of opportunities for schools to get involved and as we saw today, there’s a real enthusiasm for football among young people.

“Throughout my youth career, I always enjoyed competing in these tournaments and the 2010 win is a real career highlight to date.

“It’s an honour to be named as a tournament ambassador and I’m really looking forward to the big kick-off in May.”

Wayne Rooney, Eden Hazard, Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo are some of the famous names to have appeared at this level in the past, with the competition acting as the perfect platform for young players to showcase their talents.

England who won the European Under-17 title in 2010 and 2014, and also finished runners-up to Spain in 2017, have qualified automatically for the tournament as hosts.

After the unprecedented success of England’s development teams in 2017 and interest in youth football at an all time high, the 16 nation tournament will showcase Europe’s leading young talent.

Employment levels still rising in Chesterfield latest figures show

The number of people in work in Chesterfield rose in December according to figures released this week.

Latest regional data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the number of people claiming job seekers allowance in the town fell from 1,300 to 1,270 over the month of December.

The figures are in line with national statistics which showed a record 32.2 million people in work (75.3%) for the quarter, a rise of 415,000 on a year earlier.

Regionally, the employment rate rose from 58.9% to 59.6% quarter-on-quarter, but was slightly down on the 60.4% recorded a year earlier.

Nationally, unemployment is at its lowest level since 1975.

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Esther McVey, comments:-

“We had a record-breaking 2017 for employment and I’m delighted to see this trend continue as we enter the new year. The number of people in work is at an all-time high and the unemployment rate has not been this low for over 40 years.”

Regional figures show the unemployment rate at the end of November was 4.1%, 0.1% down on the previous quarter.

Chris Hobson, Director of Policy at East Midlands Chamber, said:-

“The national position remained very strong as 2017 ended but we have seen month-on-month variations regionally in employment levels and in claimant counts across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

“Only this morning there are reports that Tesco and Sainsbury’s cutting thousands of jobs nationally from their stores and Carillion’s collapse, which will send shockwaves through its huge UK supply chain, happened after these figures were collated.

“Without wishing to rain on the Government’s parade today, there are changing trends in the ways businesses are working and also significant inflationary pressures being faced by employers at the moment, not least being the latest rise in the National Living Wage in April, which will force them to make difficult decisions about how they balance their books.

“Here in the East Midlands we are very good at making things and shipping them to global markets, second only to London and the South East in terms of contribution to the national economy, but for far too long we have succeeded despite Government policies rather than because of the help given to the region.

“Government needs to start looking at ways of cutting the upfront costs of doing business and to make sure the East Midlands gets its fair share of investment, particularly infrastructure investment such as electrification of the Midland Main Line, to ensure it can continue to make a positive contribution to UK plc.”
