5 ideas to celebrate World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day is celebrated on 13th November and this year we can probably all agree that compassion for others is needed more than ever.

But acts of kindness don’t need to involve grand gestures.  Showing someone that you care could be as simple as a smile or remembering to say thank you.

From donating your time to others, to making time to look after yourself, Destination Chesterfield shares stories from local businesses to inspire kindness today and every day.

1. Donate your time and knowledge

If money is tight, but you still want to give back to your community, why not share your time and skills with others.

NLT Training is running a free programme to support job hunters, offering practical help and support including work experience.

ActionCOACH Chesterfield is providing free coaching webinars on marketing, mindset and finance to help businesses and charities navigate through challenging times.  And Managing Director and Certified Business Coach, Fiaz Sadiq has set aside 5 complimentary hours per week to coach 5 businesses or charities throughout lockdown.

SEO CoPilot has volunteered to build a website for Chesterfield homeless charity, Pathways, as well as helping to expand the charity’s online presence.  In the future, the team would like to support an animal shelter or similar organisation, and everyone is keen to do their bit to help the local community.

2. Support local charities

You feel good when you help others and it was fantastic to see so many people using City Taxi’s new food delivery app over the summer, raising more than £7,000 for Ashgate Hospicecare and Chesterfield Royal Hospital.  For World Kindness Day, City Taxis is planning to surprise the staff at Ashgate Hospicecare with a complimentary afternoon tea delivery, working with a local cafe.  And the company will also be inviting people to nominate a loved one to win a home delivery through its competition, running across its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels.

Over the festive period there are several initiatives you can get involved with to make Christmas magical for underprivileged local children.  Greatest Hits Radio North Derbyshire and Chesterfield FC Community Trust are just two organisations that have made it their mission to ensure every child in the area has a present to open on Christmas day.

Find more local charities to support here.  And if you’d like to track all of your fundraising and volunteering, you can do that for free with the Chesterfield-based Investors in Community platform.

3. Be there for others

Isolation and lockdown can be very lonely times and so it’s important to make time to check in with your friends, family and colleagues and find ways to come together wherever possible – whether that is in person or virtually.

Dronfield Heritage Trust has provided online activities to support wellbeing, as well as pulling out all the stops to squeeze in a wedding for a very grateful couple prior to the current lockdown period.

The University of Derby has been inviting businesses to sign up to its employee mental health support scheme and nearly 2000 employers took part in the first phase of the project, helping people to stay in or return to work.

4. Be creative

You could combine your kind spirit with your creativity like the team at Geeks Headquarters, which has volunteered its 3D printer to produce over 450 mask straps for local medical facilities during the Coronavirus pandemic.

And a variety of commemorative window and wall displays were created ahead of Remembrance Day by service users and support teams of Chesterfield-based specialist care provider, Heathcotes.  A great way to mark the day in place of traditional services that were not possible due to the lockdown period.

5. Be kind to yourself

Possibly the most important variety of kindness is self-care.

You could book in something to look forward to post lockdown – from a make up tutorial at ProMUA or reflexology and reiki at 360 Wellbeing to a coaching sessions at Stanedge Golf Club.

There are plenty of restaurants offering dining at home.  And it’s definitely okay to take a peek at our gift ideas from local businesses; you deserve an early Christmas treat.

Thank you to the businesses that have supported this blog post.  If you are interested in getting involved and helping to raise the profile of Chesterfield and Derbyshire, please email tara.underhill@chesterfield.co.uk.

Chesterfield estate agent opens second office in Chesterfield

Award-winning, local estate agent, Dales & Peaks has continued its growth plan by opening a second branch in Chesterfield.

Based in one of the modern leisure units at 131, Chatsworth Road, the new office has a prime high street location alongside popular boutique shops and independent restaurants, including Nonnas and 360 Wellbeing.

Sales Director, Tom Currey said: “As an agent consistently known for breaking the mold and creating marketing for our client’s properties to help them ‘stand out from the crowd,’ we decided against placing the new shop in the town centre, and instead opted for Chesterfield’s cosmopolitan suburb of Brampton on Chatsworth Road.

“Internally the new shop has been fitted out in the style of an upmarket bar or grand lounge and the windows are fitted with screens designed to showcase properties in a unique way – with 3D tours, slideshows of properties and a huge 65 inch screen to show off featured properties, right in the window on Chatsworth Road.  It’s all very modern and very cool!”

Established in 2006, the family business already has an office at Old Brick Works Lane in Chesterfield and in Matlock, with further plans for growth in the pipeline.  The business employs 15 staff members, with the view to growing this further in 2021.

Dales and Peaks supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 180 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Birdseye Peas production begins on time thanks to Chesterfield company MSE Hiller

MSE Hiller has designed, built and delivered a bespoke waste-water plant on time and on budget for Birdseye, despite a short project timescale, as well as challenges posed by the Covid-19 outbreak.

The timely delivery of the project has enabled the UK’s largest pea producer to maximise sales amidst changing Government legislation, ensuring Birdseye’s new facility was prepared to process and freeze 1,000t per 24 hour day, from the very first harvest.

Based in Hull, Birdseye is situated in the centre of a 30-mile radius of 200 growers, allowing the peas to be picked, transported and frozen in the shortest possible timescale. During the pea season, the factory processes a total of 50,000t of peas each year between June and August.

It is crucial that production continues without downtime and the team at MSE Hiller will continue to provide full maintenance throughout the harvesting months.

Ivan Fomin, Managing Director at MSE Hiller explains: “With tightening of legislation and permit standards, Birdseye asked MSE Hiller to develop a proposal to treat 400m3/h of their water leaving site.

“The space constraints on site and the short project timescale were going to be challenging, but a proactive project team was assembled, including the client and site operator, to ensure a timely delivery of the project in readiness for the 2020 pea season.

“The client trusted us to deliver this solution and worked positively and proactively to help us achieve the target.  It is great to see what solid teamwork can achieve under challenging circumstances.”

MSE Hiller is one of over 180 Chesterfield Champions supporting the marketing and economic growth of Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.  Find out more about MSE Hiller at https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/our-champions/mse-hiller/.

Chesterfield chosen for Designer Contracts’ new HQ following second year of growth

Nationwide flooring company, Designer Contracts has moved into new headquarters at Coney Green in Chesterfield.

Four times the size of its original head office, the impressive new space boasts 8,000 sq ft, with room to accommodate 50 people plus meeting and conference facilities.

The company has moved 25 members of the team over to the new site, while retaining the existing offices at Holmewood in Chesterfield, which will now house its central region’s administration and warehouse teams.

In May this year, Designer Contracts announced a second year of growth, with figures for the year to October 31, 2019 showing an increase of 23 per cent.  Turnover leapt from £38 million to £46.7 million and a total of 74 new jobs were created across the UK.

Peter Kelsey, MD of Designer Contracts commented: “We are thrilled to have finally moved into our new HQ.  We were due to move at the end of March, but like many, had to put our plans on hold until it was safe to make the transition.

“The move comes after significant growth, and we felt it was time to increase the overall space for our team, giving us ample room to grow further.”

“Our bold expansion strategy has allowed us to increase our customer base considerably. We’ve taken on business in new sectors, including the public and care arenas, and expanded in areas where we were already prominent.

“Despite the current situation with corona virus, we remain positive and are confident that we can reach our target £80 million turnover and increase the number of staff from 300 to 600 by 2023.”

The company has also confirmed it is fully compliant with the UK Government guidelines on managing the risk of Covid-19, and has been certified as a ‘Covid Safe’ employer.

To receive the certification, a number of measures have been put in place throughout the business to minimise the risk of transmission.  These include carrying out a Covid-19 risk assessment and sharing with employees, taking all reasonable steps to maintain a two-metre distance in the workplace, and supporting employees to work from home where possible, all while ensuring the necessary handwashing and hygiene procedures are in-line with guidance.

Designer Contracts operates across 15 UK regional facilities. As well as flooring, the company provides curtains and blinds, furniture and lighting, and operates a showhome interior design services division.

One of over 180 Chesterfield Champions supporting the marketing and economic growth of the town, the company has also been recognised as one of the top 200 businesses in Derbyshire and has been highlighted as contributing to the local economy and leading from the front.

Chesterfield manufacturer designs bespoke parts for TransPennine Express

A Chesterfield manufacturer has supported TransPennine Express to install USB sockets across 320 of its 4 car trains, enabling customers to recharge devices onboard for the first time.

Working with a range of other companies as part of a major refurbishment project, The Sanitaryware Supplies Company was selected by TBM Rail to design and manufacture nearly 900 bespoke parts for the national rail company.  Products included steel electrical switch boxes for USB sockets and cable securing clips, in addition to purpose-made grab poles for the carriages.

Director of The Sanitaryware Supplies Company, Andy Dukelow said: “The partnership with TBM Rail has been exciting and it was a pleasure to work with the rail industry once again, following the bespoke washbasins we created for a refurbishment project Bombardier carried out on East Midlands Trains.

“We were chosen because of our ability to offer fabrications across various material types, including machined parts, in short lead times and to a high specification.  This in turn, has allowed TBM Rail to open up a new service for the part of their business, which looks after fleet refurbishments.

“Railway work is very much custom made and under severe time pressure.  The product must be able to stand up to very hard wear. We are delighted that we have been able to make rail journeys a better experience for travellers.”

Restaurants and food producers can pledge meals for communities through Open Kitchens

A social enterprise is encouraging restaurants and food businesses to open their kitchens and cook meals to support communities across Chesterfield.

Working with charities and food banks, Open Kitchens has so far facilitated the distribution of over 124,000 meals to people in need across the UK. Pledging restaurants have been asked to work to a maximum budget of £1.85 per meal to cover costs, funded by community donations.

Original Recipes, Chesterfield manufacturer of the well-known potted meat, Granny Mary’s, is the first local business to work with Open Kitchens. The company has already produced over 700 pots for people in need, but aims to provide 3,000 in total, through donations to cover ingredients.

William Sutherland, Sales Director at Granny Mary’s said: “We would like to thank those who have recently donated, helping us to feed the families and elderly people, who are struggling to feed themselves during this pandemic.

“Our potted beef, which is made to Granny Mary’s original recipe is a highly nutritious premium product and we are keen to keep production going.

“In World War II, my grandparents, Eddie & Mary Sutherland supplied the same potted beef to feed the troops in the trenches and everyone back at home helping with the effort.   And in the current crisis with the help of Open Kitchens we are able to help those who fought for us throughout the war and those who are helping fight this invisible war today.”

“If you can help in any way, please visit our just giving page and give what you can. Every penny given will be put into making products that can help feed our community.  Just £1.15 is enough to provide life-sustaining food for someone in need whilst putting a smile on their face during this difficult time. And for every 10 pots we sell through Morrisons, we will donate one to the same cause.”

As well as supporting vulnerable people through Open Kitchens, the fourth generation family business is also stocking several Chesterfield businesses that are offering local delivery or collection including Casa Hotel’s Farm Shop, Dronfield Hall Barn and Owen Taylor & Sons.

Donations to support Original Recipes through Open Kitchens can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/originalrecipesokdonate?utm_term=Z8yg7JWA7.

Destination Chesterfield is going on a bear hunt

Ten bears have been hidden across the websites of businesses and visitor attractions in Chesterfield, all ready for children to find over the May Half Term holiday. And they can win prizes.

Coordinated by Destination Chesterfield, the bear hunt has been created to remind families of some of the great places available to visit locally – once social distancing restrictions are lifted.

Each of the 10 bears hidden on the websites have a letter. Once all the bears have been found they will spell out a word which bear hunters can then enter in a free prize draw for the chance to win tickets for future use at local venues.

Prizes include a family ticket for Barrow Hill Roundhouse, a family ticket for Matlock Farm Park, two pairs of tickets for Chester’s Den and a £20 Chesterfield Canal Cruise Voucher.

Bear hunters have until 8pm on Sunday 7th June to complete their search and enter the prize draw.

The bears can be found on websites belonging to Barrow Hill Roundhouse, Chesterfield Community Trust, Chesterfield Leisure Centres, Chesterfield Museum, Chesterfield Theatres, Chesterfield Canal Trust, Dronfield Hall Barn, Matlock Farm Park, Ringwood Hall Hotel & Spa and Straightcurves.

A number of the businesses and venues involved in the bear hunt have adapted their services during lockdown. Straightcurves is providing virtual creative workshops and Chesterfield Museum has offered a selection of family activities and a virtual tour.

Tara Underhill, Senior Destination Chesterfield Coordinator explained: “It has been great to work with 10 local leisure businesses to offer a fun bear hunt competition for families during lockdown. While enjoying the bear hunt and visiting the websites, it’s a great opportunity for families to enjoy many of the venues virtually.”

The bear hunt is part of a special package of support Destination Chesterfield’s is delivering to Champions during the COVID-19 crisis. Earlier this month it launched a mini website – www.chesterfield.co.uk/supportinglocal – giving details of more than 100 shops, food and drink businesses, training, venues, support and service providers in and around Chesterfield that are continuing to operate by adapting their services to meet the needs of the community.

Tara added: “As the town’s marketing campaign we work with over 180 local businesses, known as Chesterfield Champions, to raise the profile of the town. We have been keen to provide business and marketing support to help organisations navigate through these challenging times.  Many of the businesses have continued to engage with their customers online and we are keen to encourage these interactions during their temporary closure period and throughout their plans for recovery.”

Destination Chesterfield is also asking bear hunters to share their photos along with #lovechesterfield to show their support for leisure businesses in Chesterfield.

Is your business planning for recovery?

Destination Chesterfield and Chesterfield Champions share advice to help your business succeed over the next six months and into recovery.

You’ve helped your team to respond quickly.

You sourced the necessary tools for them to work from home.  Now your employees are getting to grips with their online communication tools.  And you are all adapting to your new reality.

But are you thinking long term?

In a changing environment, it can be challenging to schedule time for non-urgent, but highly important tasks.

Yet this is key to the success of your business.

“To survive a crisis, you need a battle plan,” advises Emily Coy, SME Business Advisor, Coach and Mentor, Business Doctors.

Emily recommends you decide on a vision.  What do you want your business to have achieved in six months’ time?  And how do you want it to look during your recovery phase?

And she stresses the importance of setting clear objectives for yourself and your team members.  Because you need to plan how you are going to get where you want to be.

“If you have a clear vision and you implement it,” says Emily, “then when things get back to normal, you can be out of the starting blocks much quicker than your competitors.”

Let’s consider the three main areas that Emily believes your vision should focus on.

1.Cash

It is important to seek advice to make sure you have done everything you can to improve your cash position.

You may need to be selective about what you buy over the next six months.  It’s important not to have too much cash tied up in the day-to-day costs of your business during this time.

Yet, now may be the perfect time for your business to diversify and adapt.

Several financial support packages have been announced by the Government.

Chesterfield Borough Council is administering grants to rateable businesses, as well as deferrals of rental payments for Council tenants.

The Bounce Back Loans scheme for small businesses is providing loans of up to £50,000.

The World-leading Fund is available for high-growth small and medium sized businesses focusing on research and development.

As well as supporting with your immediate cash flow, financial support such as this could allow you to invest this in new products or services.

It may also be prudent to invest in IT security, particularly if your company is new to remote working.  Microsoft Teams is recommended by Central Technology as a private, secure and seamless solution.

2.Sales

If your aim is to attract more customers or to increase sales over the next six months, you need to start your marketing plan now.

It could be the right time to develop your website or to step up your social media presence like Edge Events Management Ltd.

If you are offering new products or services or working creatively, you can apply to feature on Destination Chesterfield’s new microsite.

And if you are looking to raise your profile further, you can find out more about becoming a Chesterfield Champion.  There are currently over 180 organisations supporting the marketing and economic growth of Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

3.People

The heart of your organisation is your team.

How many people do you think your business will need – in six months and beyond?

Is your aim to reduce redundancies?  Or do you need to recruit ahead of the recovery phase?

Check out some of the Chesterfield recruitment companies that are operating virtually to give your business a competitive edge during the recovery period.

Or you may want to find out about hiring an apprentice.

And think about the skills your team will need.

Now may be a great time for you and your team to access online learning.

You could try some of the free digital webinars run by East Midlands Chamber, D2N2’s free business development courses, fully funded online NCFE qualifications delivered by Essential Site Skills from Retail Operations to Mental Health Awareness or one of the University of Derby’s fully funded online business courses such as Strategic Marketing in a Digital Age.

Stronger together

Whatever challenges you’re facing right now, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Now is not the time to try and manage everything yourself.  There’s lots of free information and advice available from Destination Chesterfield, East Midlands Chamber, FSB and D2N2. Or maybe it’s time to ask an expert such as a solicitor, accountant or business coach to help you navigate your way to success.
